Thoughts on GH2 and a bug
« on: January 22, 2009, 02:01:55 AM »
Contains spoilers

Meet Roy. He's a young architect with a talent for piloting mecha and made it all the way through four episodes and froze on episode five.

By that I mean I entered the dust cloud outside of Marques Spinner after clearing the distressed trucker event, tracking her down, finding the location of the second downed warship, clearing that and returning to that location just incase something had changed.

Seemed that it had - Whenever Roy tries to leave the area, he is "under attacked" and placed back in the now very empty dust cloud. Hopefully this can be fixed and if you want, I can send the save.

Some general thoughts about GH2: The story missions are unfortunately rather counter-intuitive. While I now know that investing XP in Awareness to give me a better chance of spotting mechs outside the station is a very good idea, quite alot of the missions don't actually specify whether you should be in the station exterior or even how to find them. While the first
few episodes tend to follow the predictable formula of "Go outside. Wander around alot", later on I found myself pretty much lost as to where to go - So I drifted around the station until I found suspicious person events (savescumming until I passed the conversation roll was the only way I could really find the enemy base) and when those gave way to the less clear cut "The enemy of my enemy was an ex-lover of that enemy" event (or something like that), about the only way I could find more clues was to phone up the NPC's mentioned by my lancemate.

Said lancemate signed up to me so that I could train her. While I know that the lancemate generator is based off how powerful your character is, the fact that said person was easily twice as powerful as the player character really doesn't seem to fit the reason of why she joined. Perhaps this event should be more of an early game one?

Don't get me wrong. I love Gearhead and despite it's flaws I'm enjoying Gearhead II as well, but I feel that the missions really need a bit of adjustment to make what to do clearer.

Looking forward to the next release and hoping to get a postcard!

Yes, send me the save file. That'll save me the problem of hunting down the bug and I should be able to fix it for you at the same time.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have worked. I'm glad that it's fixed for the next version, but I guess I'll have to start a new game.

Any comment on the invitation?

quite alot of the missions don't actually specify whether you should be in the station exterior or even how to find them.

Good point. I haven't edited the dialog for the standard missions in quite some time, so I should probably go through them and make sure each one tells specifically where the encounter is.

For the core story missions, though, locating the encounter is part of the job. I think one problem here is that the searching mechanism isn't obvious. Most clues in GearHead2 come from rumors- in your case, the things your lancemate was telling you. Conversation is one of the three semi-mandatory skills, along with Mecha Piloting and Dodge.

Here's an idea: Add a rumor-monger for each town. This will be like a shop where you can buy rumors; not all rumors will be available, but all the important ones should be. You'll be given a list of possible rumors and prices, like "Rumor about (Character X), $1250". If I did that I should also have a way to review rumors that you've heard... hm.

Maybe a new function similiar to the memo system?

Rumour monger

Well, bars are already in the game..Sort of. Why not expand those a little bit and have the barkeep offer information as well as cocktails? Seems to fit a bit more than having a dedicated rumour shop.

A rumour tracker does indeed sound like a function that'd be close to the memo system. Would it be terribly difficult to add that to PCS's?

Another thing about PCS's while we're at it might be the option to change from the current "This is what's happening. Next/Previous memo?" format to a list similar to the inventory screen? What about when the news gets implemented in GH2, have stories run, more information about which (sidequests) can be purchased at the rumour monger?

Also, I've noticed that one of the NPC's is 118 years old. Is this intentional?

I don't see how it wouldn't be possible...
Especially with the genetic engineering that occured before the night of fire.

IIRC you are talking about Galena Hodges,  there is a rumour about her helping people from nearly one century. So it's intentional.

Maybe the old girl is actually a robot? Speaking of which, did the plot event "You are actually a robot" ever make it in? And are the mutation "talents" still going to come in?

--

Edit: Yeah, that's the NPC. Thanks for the informatiom

--

Edit the second: I started a new character, got to Episode 9 in Emerald Spinner. Had to find a datachip..But then I killed the giant robot outside of the spinner and that ended the episode with no direction on where to go from there. Any recommendations on what to do?

The giant robot outside the spinner is not part of the core story, so keep trying :-)

And yet the game reports the episode has ended....Plus I got no flipping idea on how to find datachips. Would you mind giving me a hand in that regard?

I suspect the reason for the end of the episode is that you were in the episode where your enemy challenged you to find the item first, and you ran out of time. That should have informed you of what happened instead of just ending the episode, though. You can send me the save file again and I'll try to figure out what happened.

You find the data chip the same way you find everything- get rumors and follow up on them.
