HP Pavillion dv9700z Entertainment Notebook Wireless help
« on: June 26, 2008, 02:23:28 PM »
You're my last (and first) hope. In other words, anyone know how to troubleshoot the wireless without internet? I'm using a library computer or PSP to use the internet right now. I need a zero-file way to fix it. I can file instructions, but I need to get my laptop's wireless internet working. I'm in range of the network, it just doesn't pop anything about the network adapter up. I've also checked the switch (both on/off positions, I'm assuming) with re-boots. The HP Wireless Assistant was no help back when it worked.

Most laptops nowadays come with a recovery partition or disk, but you might want to make use of XP's automatic system restore points. Look it up in the start menu and choose a restore point that was made before your wireless died on you.

I probably turned 'em off to save space. Plus, the problems started this winter, and I'd have to go back to last summer's restore if I had it.

What makes you think the problem is software related?

Unless your problem started after something you did to the software, it's probably a hardware failure, in which case you need to bring the laptop in for repair.  If you can't find a repair facility for your brand of laptop, then your next plan is to buy a third-party wireless networking PC-Card.

Also, most laptops new enough to have built-in wireless have build-in wired networking (100BaseT) as well.  While I doubt any "file fixes" would help you, you could use that to get them onto your system without using the wireless.

It works on-off. It's on right now, but the problem is that it's not reliable, and it usually sticks with being off. I usually use wired when I'm at home, and wireless away.

Maybe every eighth restart it'll be on, just like that, and the next boot-up it's off.
