NPCs are very hard to please
« on: April 02, 2008, 09:12:24 AM »
I have some questions about GH1.

1) What *exactly* do the two meters in the conversation dialog mean?

One is likely how much they love (green)/hate (red) you, the other seems to be the time limit of this conversation?

My female character has 12 in Charm (13 when happy), 1 in Flirtation and 3 in Conversation.

But I never seem to be able to keep the important NPCs happy. Chatting them is difficult... with a few exceptions, most will eventually got mad at me.

So far in my current game, the doctor and cook in Hogye hate me (in the red). Hyolee got a reaction boost when I retrieved her journal, but has already began returning to neutral. I avoided talking to Vikki until I completed the Hogye arena, but she has already gone a little into the red now. The guardian in Snake Lake too. I only managed to pickup one in the Markheim Fortress, and that's only because it was offered at a price, and I said I can only pay him with my company.

Every previous characters of mine managed to win the arena in Hogye, Vikki got the [join] option but every single one of them failed to raise her reaction. The first one managed to get a full red bar, and Vikki won't talk at all in that case.

2) How? Just how do you chat them up to be nice and friendly to you? How much points in charm, conversation and flirtation? I've seen posts saying there are no problems leaving charm at an extremely low value (is that you, Erathoniel?)

3) And when they did get mad at you, how do you turn the tide? In my games once they turn red, they never turn back to the nice side.

I have to say that both the docs and wiki said NOTHING about how this works...

EDIT:

4) I notice there is an article in wiki explaining how the die are thrown... however, I maintain that without the value being checked against, the dice throwing table is useless.

In my opinion the player must have some idea about how good his character's ability is in the task he's doing. Otherwise there would be nothing to base decisions on. Currently we only get a yes/no...

Your personal traits have a lot to do with it.  Being a thief is the quickest way to piss off a shopkeeper.  Try hitting the "@" symbol to get a readout of your characters current traits and see if anything interesting pops up.

Well, if you think that NPCs are hard to please. try Fallout fans.
That bunch is amazingly hard to please.
I can know, I'm part of it. :p
1) What *exactly* do the two meters in the conversation dialog mean?

The bar ontop is how much they like you.
While the bottom bar is how much they want to keep talking with you. (it decreases each time you use chat)
The more they like you, the more they'll want to chat with you.

2) No, I don't recall ever saying that. I usually keep charm really, really high. The skills can be left low, but I keep Charm as one of my major stats. I don't min-max that much.

3) I think it's generally the result of conflicting traits or whatnot, and is solved with any of the following:
a: Personality change
b: Diplomacy talent purchase
c: Mega-training specific stats, so you can't lose
d: Savefile hacking (least recommended).

4) I'll try to look through the source some time. I'll check as soon as I can.

It would help if anyone knew which source component to look in.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. The guides said the Snake Lake guardian and Vikki as the early lancemates, I thought getting them would not be too difficult.

So it is best to not chat NPCs too much until I can get my Charm and Conversation/Flirtation high...

@Burzmali:

At the time I made Vikki angry, IIRC I was Heroic (30 or so), Slightly Lawful (5), Slightly Renowned (less than 20), Slightly Spiritual (8), Cheerful and Very Outgoing.

Renowned. That's it. And cheerful. Those are your problems.

When I won my 8th Hogye arena battle, Vikki asked me my recipe of success... and I chose the reply "determination". I know she's down on her luck, but I thought I might be able to help her out of it. So she's jealous?

What happens if your renown and cheerful reputation go up after Vikki joined? Would she leave?

Probably not, but she wouldn't be too happy. Those are just guesses. You could work on getting more charm and conversation, as well as Diplomacy if you have a free talent slot.

I got Bishounen before you replied... since I have 2 in Flirtation as well, this allows me to chat to Vikki and actually raise her reaction. I also raised my charm twice to 17. Conversation is 6 from using it.

Edit:

Do lancemates get the same reputation adjustments as the PC? If Vikki tag along long enough, would she get rid of her wangtta reputation?

I don't honestly know. I assume at least her reputation would change.

They are still saying she's the unluckiest pilot ever, but I think I heard about her other reputations (lawful, cheerful, sociable) only recently. Those match my reputations.

Am I imagining things?

I managed to get her reaction quite high (around 75%), to the point I can drop her to get past Fluffy, then get her to join again.

There is still a chance for a sudden reaction drop (guess it's what Diplomatic guards against), so I don't chat with her much.
