Forum avatars on chaosforge.org work on a per post basis.

Your avatar changes as your post count improves.

For example: In the GH forums no one has yet unlocked the level 2 avatar so the sequence is Dora - > ??

In the DoomRL forums the sequence is Former Human - > Former Human Sargent - > Imp - > Etc

Just dont spam to get your count up ;)

I know that many of you would prefer custom avatars, but please give the system a chance -- I think it's much fun, and gives the forum a clean look :).

Also, it gives me some direct Pavlovian motivation to reply to threads promptly.

It attracts spam and post padding. Pretty much similar issues with post count systems.

So yes, dinner.

In a small community, spam might not be such a big problem. I must admit, though, that one advantage of tightly controlled avatars (ones bound to a certain KB limit, for instance, like my old black and white Priss Asagiri avatar) make the person recognizable at a glance.

At the moment all of the forumites are Doras, Given roughly 5 more people and a month there will be a post gap and subsequently a wide range of avatars in use so that you can identify roughly 20% of the forumites with a glance.

In the Gearhead Usenet group (Ok fine, Its Yahoo but it acts like Usenet) Joseph Hewitt has mentioned that he would like it possible for custom avatars to be handed out as rewards...

Peter Cordes has suggested that they should be given out to those who have made improvements on Gearhead.

I suppose he is right, Because in a small forum like this the only noteable achievements are being a moderator or a contributor.

Sweet!

Do we have need for moderators yet? Or will they be needed later on?

The current only moderator is Joseph. I can add additional ones if he requests that. Also custom titles (instead of the boring "Member") :-P.

I don't think we need additional moderators yet, althought maybe another one would be a good idea just for those times when inevitably I'll be too busy to check in much.

I will be off on vacation in a week or two, so better choose another person to be a moderator too. I'd recommend Anticheese for that -- he's a great mod on the DoomRL forum*.

So name the person, and after he agrees I'll grant the status.

* up to the level of criticizing and correcting the forum administrator for multi-posting :D.
