getting more skill slots via installing cyberware

How about this: Go back to the old system, with Knowledge modifiers not affecting the skill limit. Add a new type of skillslot cyberware that will allow the player to install skill software, but won't allow the player to improve upon the base skill levels granted by the software (without purchasing the skill regularly and invoking the skill penalty from that). The skillsoft will have to grant a skill level greater than the bonus usually provided by the software, otherwise this would be pretty useless.

How does that sound? It gets around the messy problem of what to do when Knowledge changes, the chocolate bar issue, and everything else.

On a related note, I read this a few days ago:

Works for me!

I'm gonna miss the idea of studying with chocolate.
Still, skillsoft is brilliant, and I would have asked for it anyway.

Meh. Studying with chocolate in real-life is a pain. You get all jittery, develop temporary (or not so) attention disorders, and just generally get less out of it.

(post edited on account of late self-censorship)
Sorry. I'm bitter, especially since everybody seems to love Shadowrun except me, and nobody else seems to think of any other setting as cyberpunky enough.
I just don't grasp that.

That should be ok.

Actually, it's fine if some cyberware does add or remove general purpose skillslots.  It's just the idea that all Kn-modifying cyberware must do so that I object to.

Note that it's actually conceivable that a cyberware mod could increase skillslots while decreasing Knowledge.  This would be because some "CPU" had to be removed to make room for more "RAM"....

Actually I said W.W.S.D. as a support, not a reason, because Shadowrun would leave you lying in a gutter or hospital bed for uninstalling brain cyberware.
