Requested Artwork
« on: July 23, 2006, 03:53:01 PM »
Phil wanted to start a topic about this in the mailing list, so I went ahead and did it instead. If that makes any sense.

There is an associated wiki page, which also contains instructions as to what needs to be contributed/fixed.

As we all know, a number of mechs don't have any particular artwork associated with them, but instead default to the Buru Buru spriteset. Also, with the development of GearHead 2, items also need pictures for the inventory and trade systems.

I made a file containing the mecha in GH1 that didn't have graphics, or had 'wonky' graphics (see the file for what I mean), named "missing_mecha_gfx.txt". Near the bottom of the linked page, but it's kinda old.

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/gearhead_dev/f  iles/

For convenience, the list is:
* Alba
* Aranos
* Century
* Chameleon (all variants)
* Chimentero
* Domino
* Esher
* Fenris
* Gobuksan
* Ice Wind/Fox
* Joust
* Luna II
* Musketeer (just wonky)
* Puma
* Savin (all variants, just wonky)
* Strongarm (just wonky)

Any other art requests are also welcome.

Here's my list. If an item says [fixed], then the fixed version is included in my graphics add-on.

Models that need to be re-rendered using an orthographic camera:
* Petrarch
* Esher (hard to tell)
* Kojedo
* Monstrous
* Argoseyer
* Cetus (hard to tell)
* Sentinel
* Ultari
* Gigas

Models where the camera angle is too high:
* All LDraw models.
* Petrarch
* ZeroSaiko
* Osprey
* HoverTruck
* HoverTruck2
* Sentinel
* Phoenix (hard to tell)
* [fixed] Rover
* Renegade
* Vespa
* Excel
* Radcliffe (possibly. hard to tell.)
* Harpy (is an LDraw model.)

Mecha with other issues:
* Quetzael (is hand-drawn, AFAIK. should be rendered in 3D.)
* Musketeer (side-view is not at an angle.)
* Strongarm (same issue as Musketeer.)
* Savin (side-view appears to not be at an angle. hard to tell without the actual 3D model. I think it's OK.)
* Corsair (same issue as Savin.)
* Hariseng (same issue as Savin.)
* Thorshammer (same issue as Savin.)
* Trailblazer (same issue as Savin.)

Models that are rendered at the wrong scale:
* [fixed] Rover (too big. Renegade is more or less at the correct scale for this model.)

Mecha missing models (information from Tung Nguyen's list):
* Alba
* Aranos
* Century
* Chameleon
* Chimentero (currently uses a Zoanoid model.)
* Domino
* Esher
* Fenris
* [fixed] Gobuksan
* Ice Wind/Fox
* Joust
* Luna II
* Puma

New sprites I've created that are, as of yet, unassigned:
* aer_shuttle
* tur_gun
* tur_missile

Sprites that I've changed for other reasons:
* btr_condor (rerendered to reflect updated model)
* ghu_renegade (new model)

Here's a task-list for the wall sprites (GH1 only):

Walls with thin sprites:
* wall_earth
* wall_industrial
* wall_mumetal
* wall_stone

Walls without thin sprites:
* wall_wall
* wall_wood
* wall_ziggurat (renamed from wall_fortress)
* wall_commercial
* [fixed] wall_fortress (should be renamed to wall_ziggurat, and replaced with a new, low sprite for mecha-scale fortress wall sprites)
* wall_garage
* wall_gold
* wall_hospital
* wall_low
* wall_neon
* [fixed] wall_organic
* wall_residential
* wall_restaraunt
* wall_stainlesssteel
* wall_steel

New wall sprites I've created that are, as of yet, unassigned:
* wall_tech
* wall_block
* wall_arena_stands
* wall_arena_tower
* wall_brick

I've also created a bunch of other sprites, including new cursor sprites for the Attack ('a') and Use ('u') commands, different sprites for the various weapon types, directional road sprites, sprites of buildings for battles in metropolitan areas, and new sprites for props that don't have their own dedicated images.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the Wiki would serve a lot better for placing request list, don't you think?

I think you're probably right, although since we can edit our own posts the forum should do nicely as well.

I'll get to work on adding support for the rest of the thin walls- that's something else I had forgotten.

putting this on the Wiki might be a good idea.  I'm not familiar with Wiki, though.  I only suggested the forum since it's likely to be more visible than the mailing list.

btw, regarding 3D renders, I'm only limited to making LDraw models, though I have enough know-how to export it to POV-Ray, and render in orthographic view... the angle is 30 (forgot which axis) i think.  My problem would most likely be lighting.  I've downloaded anim8tor but i can't use it properly yet.

For GH2, the items and mechs would need some sort of portraiture, right?  I can do those if it's just 2D.  If someone opts to go with 3D renders for everything, that's fine, too.

Actually you as a mod can :P. Others are limited to a 24 hour period.

First post edited to include the wiki page link, so it's more obvious.

Someone should also compile a list of which mecha have models publically available, and which don't. I'll start taking a look through the Files section of the Group.

I wonder... I have 3DS MAX files of the Ova Knight, Petrarch and Luna II -- any use for them?

You could post them along with a few good looking shots of them so that the sprite artists could use them for inspiration

Yes, absolutely. For use in the game the models should be recolored to a red/yellow/green scheme that can be used by the color swapper, then rendered without antialiasing. If you could send me the models I could do the color swapping and rendering myself.

Would you be willing to upload them to the Files section of the Yahoo! Group?
