I've noticed that every now and then, in both GH1 and 2, you'll find yourself in need of a hospital...
only to find that the doctor does not offer medical aid.
this has happened once in a session in GH2, in which I had 'repeatedly broken my bones', and the only doctor I could find opened a shop instead of healing me and tending to my injuries.
I found myself helpless, as I had no skill in medicine, and therefor could not attempt to fix myself.

I'm not sure about GH2, but in GH1 "Your bones have been repeatedly broken" is one of 5 permanent injuries you can receive when you "die" in personal scale combat.  The doctor can't fix this problem, so if you go to him with this problem and no other injury, he has nothing to do.

The only way to remove one of these injuries is to install cyberware of a sort that replaces your ruined body components.  In GH1 for the broken bones status, these would be: "Reinforced Skeleton", "Lightened Skeleton", and "Heavy Lifting Skeletal Frame".

Of course, Cyberware is expensive and inferior in some significant respects to an uninjured character.

This aspect of the game is basically there to make up for the fact that you have no risk of losing your mecha in personal scale.

What are the other four permanent injuries then?

And wouldn't repeatedly broken bones be a good thing?
Seeing as they'd get stronger.

Doctors should give a message when you have a permanent injury... saying that only ciber prosthetics  can help you with some of your injuries (it could be done with 10 of 12 lines or code in the shopping section plus one in  messages.txt)

Other ones are:
INFO_Status21 <You have been blinded in one eye.>
INFO_Status22 <Your spine has been perminantly injured.>
INFO_Status23 <Your muscles are torn.>
INFO_Status24 <Your bones have been repeatedly broken.>
INFO_Status25 <You suffer from internal injuries.>

Ah, I see.
I feel stupid now.
XD
Well, I'll have to deal with that since I'm a purely personal scale player.

There's strategic breaking, and then there's repeated dramatic trauma. Especially when you get into finger bones and such, I imagine there's a difference.
As a poor analogy, the phrase "whatever doesn't kill me only makes me stronger" doesn't apply when part of you actually dies. This would include heart attacks, strokes, and the loss of limbs.
Essentially, while strategically breaking or cracking bones can make them stronger, repeatedly traumatically injuring yourself with bullets and swords doesn't promote that kind of healing; also, it's not advisable to try to strengthen your bones this way when not in controlled circumstances.

Mind you, I'm no medic.

One other thing you should probably know: Permanent injuries are not entirely random.  When you die, the game adds up ({Team Medicine skill-roll} / 20) + {Your Heroism score}.  If this is less than the number of resurrections you've already had, you get crippled.

So when you got your bones broken, you were probably either evil or had many previous near death experiences.  You might try modifying your strategy next time -- every death counts, and there is a bit of karma here.

I do try to stay alive.
I just prefer personal scale stuff to the mechas.
It seems so well done, and well, the mecha combat never did appeal to me.
I have much more fun fighting people and monsters up close and personal.

One would think they would have cheap prosthetics... I just had a really bad leg cramp, or I tore my calf.

Ick! Don't do that, it's not good for you.
As to cheap prosthetics, you've got a point. It would be interesting to have cybernetics in the setting what didn't make you uber, just so's you had something to replace your repeatedly broken bones with.

Oh, trust me, it gives me an excuse to sit around all day. That makes it much easier for me to do things.
