Gearhead Model images (Adding & posting)
« on: August 12, 2007, 12:30:31 PM »
I've only grabbed the stock images from the GH/GH2 page; I noticed a number of mechs use the Buru Buru model image.  I made something for the Chimentero, but can't seem to get the colors / size right to make the images look good.

Are there images for all mecha? (has someone already worked on this?)

Is there an image tutorial or guide?

Would someone want to take my Chimentero and make it a model for the game?

If someone wants my model, what would be the best format to send?  I am currently using Wings3d, which has several conversions.  I even have a .X converter, if it helps.

Here are some additional sprites to use for your mecha:

Check the wiki for some guides on creating sprites.

Took me some looking, but I found the files.  POVRay is giving me errors when I try to render the files - somethign about lots of divide by zero entries in gearhead.inc, among other things.

I am using a different editor to initially create the files and poseray to convert them to POVRay files; I don't know if it is the .inc or the conversion process that is the issue.

I'll keep looking into it.

I got the model done using POVRay, but my colors don't do it justice.

Icon Set

3ds file, the POVray files, and a large picture

Feel free to improve on the model to make the detail more visible.

Really good...
All other images and models were mostly done by JH
IMHO you should try to model the GH2 Skull hooverfigther
http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org/mecha_12.  html
or the Gorilla
http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org/mecha_6.h  tml
So you'll have an official image to guide you and better chances to get them in the game.

EDIT: if you want a mecha that is also in GH1 you can try the Puma (the portrait image is missing in the web page but you can find it in GH2 image folder as item_puma.png)

I can do any... but portraits really help.

I really worked on this because it's my current favorite mech and has no icon...  I have other stuff I am working on before I get around to any more of these.  (probably a couple of weeks before I even start - and I had a robot half finished, too)

Do I need to do anything to get this noticed by JH?  Would this get used in the game?  I actually hoped it would be a help.

Currently no, but I can send you a design version I updated for GH2.

Between you and me and without any kind of proof ;-), IMHO Joseph is trying to use only his own creations in the mecha and world departments. This way he can reuse them in his other creations:
comics (see http://ataraxia.comicgenesis.com), stories, TV series, film
trilogies or comercial games.
I would have done it too.
I did my share of game art IP mistakes and I'm happy to see that GH2 try stay exta clear of them... even as it seems to mean removing most desing inspired by battletech or similar sources.
Maybe you can include your images using a clever plot:
  - If you did them as a work for hire or based on his drawing the IP of them will be his. Joseph later can release a version in the game under LGPL but be able to use the design in other places (even comercial ones).
  - Nobody says that you cannot be hired cheaply (a 'thank u' email is a good price point)

Ok.. most of the information of this message is unconfirmed by JH and purely based on my twisted mind perceptions.

I would rather see my design used than have it sit on the wayside;  this is just a hobby, and a "thank you" (and perhaps credit to the screen name?)  is all I ever ask.

Of course, some companies are paranoid enough to refuse even "freely offered" works - in that case, a "supplemental image pack"  or "fanpack" would be really cool.

Also I would actually appreciate someone taking my original design and modifying it enough to make some of the detail clearer.   I'm not expecting everything from a large-scale mech to show up on a small, but I know there's a way to make the legs show more than single-color blotches, for example.  Maybe I'll photoshop the small pics a bit myself.

Or maybe we should find his postal adress so we can send a black on white version saying that it's ok. Maybe handwriten at it?
Has to be signed ofcourse.

At least that way there's no reason for him not to use it.
Or at least legally speaking.

Though I guess then, that we might need a similiar permission to actually make stuff like that...

...Yeah...
Maybe just leave at it.
I've seen something similiar that ended up pretty negative. (fanmade non-profit film that wasn't accepted >_>)

At the moment to get anything noticed by me you pretty much have to be in the same room and thwack me with a rolled up newspaper. At least that works for my co-workers... most of the time.

That's right. I've seen some horrible ownership arguments on the net, and have been hoping to avoid those myself. Plus, I've been trying to get a unified look for everything, and that's hard to do when there are multiple people all contributing.

Back to the subject at hand. I like your Chimentero. It's much closer to my own sketches of the Chimentero than a previous version that was submitted by someone else. It has the backward knees, the lumpy body, and the arms are nearly the same. My storage modules are shaped differently and the body below the cockpit is also a bit different. I'd like to use your sprite in the game.

Maybe I should write up a GearHead submission agreement for things like this- something along the lines that I will be able to use the submitted mecha in all GH derived works, but at the same time the original artist will be able to use the mecha design (minus the GearHead name) in any of their works as well. I think this kind of contract would be fair, and it has precedent in the mecha world.

What do you think?

... wait, there was a PATTERN to follow?!?

Seriously, I did all of that free-form, based off of the mecha specs.  I tried to make a "stylized gargoyle" (hence the pods with oversized "wing" hoverjets).    I'd love to see what it was "supposed" to look like :)

As I said before, I would not mind just about any contract that allowed this to help "fill in the gaps" in GH, so to speak.  I'd make sure you have a "modification" clause in there in case you want to tweak anything.  Alternately (at least in my case), I could see you tweaking the model as a "fellow fan / modder", then contracting the tweaked model (which might be under joint ownership at that point?).

I've seen enough fan-supported software, and however it works I just want to help out a bit.

I took the liberty of re-rendering the file, this time using gearhead.inc.
