- Rip off some ideas from DoomRL.

BINGO! DoomRL is great - haven't played it in a while though, need to do that! The source material seems kinda limiting, though. Randomly generated weapons would be kinda cool, like weapons in ADOM. Bonus, prefix, suffix, of foo modifier.

So... you are Echo? Meh... I wish everyone would just come up with one username and stick with that on every forum.

Nope. I only use my real name here because it automatically showed up in the GH mailing list, back when that was the main community centre. Everywhere else, I use the same nick.

In some ways I like DeadCold more than I like GearHead. DC is very sharp and focused, while GH is an archetypical "kitchen sink" roguelike.

I agree. DeadCold has a really strong theme to it, but both games have their place. The first time I stumbled across the crew quarters, I saw the blood on the floor and I got the strong impression that something really happened there. Or picking off scarabs by an abandoned altar. Or when I saw the other ships, wondering why they were still left there.

Just make sure you don't go down the MMORPG road with the randart weapons.

I'm wildly guessing then that one such doomrl idea is to make the game difficulty to being incredibly hard?

Although it wouldn't be the first time an Roguelike has taken that path.  Check out this thread on the Dwarf Fortress forums for some extreme examples....

I kinda like this idea.

Plasma Derringer
Gas Vented Airsoft Rifle with Underslung Grenade Launcher (Cursed)
Specially Vented Double Laser Rifle with Custom Grip +1
Pocket Computer Vibro-Bayonet +4
Laser-Guided Quad Missile Launcher with Underslung Laser-Guided Quad Missile Launcher +2

Yeah, I'm liking that plasma derringer. Who needs range and practicality in a holdout weapon? Power and pain, man, that's what you need!
Even so, I'm trying to figure out how you can justify a BB gun with an underslung grenade launcher.

Its a cursed Grenade Launcher.  That certainly makes it justifiable.

Toys of the damned.

(Boy) "Santa..I want a BB gun with the power of Boom!"

(Santa) "Okay, just be a good boy this year..."

9 Months later....

(Boy) "Sweet! Thanks Santa!"

(Santa) "No problem..*mumble*youlittlesonofa..thatcatdidnotdes ervethat*mumble*"

(Boy) "Cool! It's got a grenade launcher!"

(Santa) "Yes. Yes it does."

(kid begins to activate the grenade launcher)

(Santa again) "Unfortunatly for you it fires towards the wielder."

(Kid) "Say what?"

I've been happily introducing people to that Radar article over the last two days. It's a beautiful thing.

I think that Santa might leave you some unshielded weapons-grade uranium instead of coal. "Aw man, coal. Wait. This stuff's glowing."

...not that uranium looks like coal. Or that I know what uranium looks like. THERE ARE NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION HERE, NO SIR. Ignore the Mecha behind the curtain.
