Can't Quite Get Argoseyer. Spoilers?

<< < (3/4) > >>

Joseph Hewitt:
I had to check the script to find the answer to this. It looks to me like the item is lost forever; I'm not 100% sure on that but if you can't find it again after returning to the same depth it's a safe bet.

oh, for the Argoseyer:

this is how I imagine it now :D more organic tho

DudeGuyMan:
Bumping an old thread I turned up while looking for the answer to this same question.

So the disk is at 55. The key lets you go past 60. But if you go past 55 without getting the disk, it magically vanishes? Why on earth would I ever want the key then? I went down to 65 figuring, well, I must need to go down through the door this key lets me through.

How do I add the disk to my inventory by save editing?

xpace:
Since this thread has already been necro'd...

That link is already broken. But this one still works:

Hmm... I guess that does look a lot like the Argoseyer.

I'm not sure exactly, but you might want to start by reading the Talents & Savegame Hacking thread. Specifically, this part:

For items, especially non-plot related ones like the laser drill, it's a lot easier to just add it into the design files instead of messing around with the save file. You've got to buy it from some shop or another afterwards, but it's a considerably simpler process. Design file editing's pretty straightforward, even moreso in GH1.

Several of us have tried hacking savegames to add items. But while we do succeed with hacking the skills or talents or modifying an existing item, attempts to add new items tends to fail one way or another. (I suspect each item is split up into different parts in the save file.) So, like Frumple said, adding a quest item (like the Argoseyer disk) to the shop item list to buy is by far the easiest approach. That, or just use a backup of an earlier save before the disk was lost.

Speaking of which, shouldn't it be possible to edit the Argoseyer plot itself so that the disk does not get lost if the player leaves the level without grabbing it? Wouldn't that just involve changing the script so that the level with the disk does not regenerate randomly every time you enter it? Then such changes could be made into a patch or something and making that available to all might prevent such headaches...

Well hey, this is my opportunity to contribute something then, because I totally hacked the Argoseyer disk into my inventory after posting last night with no sweat.

1) I opened my save file, hit CTRL-F, and searched for "crystal disk". I found a copy of the item sitting somewhere, I don't even really know where or why.

2) I looked at other items and the way the format repeated and realized that the item name is actually toward the end of each entry, not the top. I copied the following:

--- Quote ---
Z
-1
-1
0 12 2 10000 0
Stats
0 7 0 35
-1
name <Crystal Disk>
desc <This is an antique style datachip. It appears to be military grade.>
--- End quote ---

3) I searched around until I found a list of items that I knew corresponded to my inventory. I then just pasted the above in between the entries for two of the items I already had.

4) I rebooted the game, looked at my fancy new Crystal Disk, then ran off and got the Argoseyer with no problems.
