GH Wiki - still running?
« on: July 22, 2006, 03:35:03 AM »
I was just wondering if we've all been busy with work/other hobbies, or if interest in the Wiki has waned? I know, personally, I've been busy with a number of other things, including building things in Second Life, picking up my ADOM addiction again, and enjoying games with my old-but-new graphics card that I received (free as in beer, awesome!). I'm thinking about scrounging up some research and starting to play Gearhead a little more regulary come Monday. I'll probably write more mecha pages, maybe a little intro to the weapon types (BLAST, BURN, ect.).

Speaking of mecha pages: do we like the format I started on the Buru Buru page, at http://ghwiki.chaosforge.org/index.php/Buru_Buru ? Please note that Joseph added a lot of good stuff to the page, too. I was just wondering if my simple analysis (engine, mecha type, weapons, variants, tips) was good, or if I should aim for a different format?

Well, as I said on the mailing list, I'm currently skirting the limits of heat exhaustion and working on some other things. I hope to find some time for the wiki soon, but probably not this weekend.

I like the way you've set up the BuruBuru page, and I think that would be a good format for the other mecha pages.

Work on the Wiki is ALWAYS appriciated ;-). As far as the Mecha pages are concered, once two or more pages are filled up, I'll prepare a MediaWiki template for those.

I think sprites and concept artwork should also be added. Can we upload images to the wiki? Or, is it ok if we upload images to ImageShack?

Uh, to be honest I don't know (YET) how to activate the upload safely. I'll take a look once I have some free time.

To be honest, I thought the image upload was disabled just so that you could save hosting space/bandwidth. If you're concerned about security, is there any way to enable image upload for only certain members, such as admins and mods?

Not as far as I know, But what if the channels to getting a wiki account are limited to applying for it on the forum? I know it sounds a little harsh but at least this way we can make sure that its not a spambot.

<Doomsaying>

You might be going "But no! A spambot could never ruin our small community!" but believe me, I've seen it happen...

Ah, you can't even imagine how many spambots register at the DoomRL forum every week :-P. To bad there's email confirmation ^_^

Editing of the wiki is already restricted to email-validated users. Is this not sufficient for image uploads?

I meant I don't know how upload works :-P. Also if much images would be uploaded I'd risk running out of space :)

We can use the Yahoo! Group as a place to host images. I just tested it on this page.

[EDIT] It only seems to work if the images are located in the Files section, which has finite space.

Yeah, you do :D. Now tough, the only thing that I need to maintain are those stupid signups that don't know about the confirmation thingy. Yet it's only a simple update to the database every week :>

As far as the Mecha pages are concered, once two or more pages are filled up, I'll prepare a MediaWiki template for those.

Three mecha pages are now up: the BuruBuru, Vadel, and Zerosaiko. It would be nice if in addition to a page template we could have one of those info boxes on the right hand side containing things like the mecha's picture (if/when pictures are enabled), its mass, basic stats, manufacturer, factions that use it, and so on.
