Expanding the L5 Region
« on: January 10, 2007, 03:01:18 AM »
Soon I will begin expanding the L5 region. There are two other major governments that exist here: the Free Commerce States and the Rishiri Dominion.

The FCS exists mostly as a free trade and mutual defense association; both the L5 Alliance and the Rishiri Dominion are technically still members.

The Rishiri Dominion is an offshoot which has close ties to Luna and subscribes to the Aegis Doctrine (peace through unity, unity through strength). Unlike Luna, the Rishiri Dominion is not a totalitarian government. Like the other L5 colonies it is a technocracy, has a high standard of living and fairly good protection for human rights. The Rishiri council believes that the space colonies can and should form a new, utopian civilization. Forces which oppose this ideal, such as the bohemian colonies and the Blades of Crihna pirates, should be eliminated. Although in conflict with the L5 Alliance, neither side shows much interest in attacking the other. The residents of the RD colonies view other spinner dwellers as misguided, but still part of this new step in human evolution, even if they don't realize it yet.

Most of the spinners in the L5 region will be found on the outside rim of the map torus in mostly a straight line. The inside torus is closer to the trojan asteroids at L5 center; here there are mining colonies and secret pirate bases.

The next colonies to be added are-
Gaos Spinner, a resort colony, member of the FCS
Kosaka Spinner, capital of the FCS
Theles Spinner, aka Meatyard, member of the FCS
Xianzai Spinner, a large trading hub between the L5 colonies, Luna, Earth, and beyond. Member of the FCS.

After that I will add some Rishiri Dominion colonies; unfortunately the only one I currently have detailed is Rishiri Spinner itself.

I may also add the Federated Territories space station Highfox-1. Aegis doesn't have a dedicated space station, but the Aegis Expeditionary Force does work out of the Rishiri Dominion.

Security in the FCS is provided by a number of private mecha forces and the Privateer's Guild. Soldiers and conventional military forces are practically unknown in the colonies.

The Rishiri Dominion's mecha force is called the Rocket Stars. I've decided that they will have transforming mecha created by a third as-yet-unnamed L5 area corporation.

Once the L5 region is sufficiently large, I'll add episode breaks to the core story. The game should, at that point, start looking fairly playable.

One thing that needs to be done before then is to redo the garrisons used by the game. Right now I think it produces far too many pilots/police/etc. Also, adding the guaranteed garrisons to cities is a pain.

I also need to add more plots, and make sure that all the factions are working. By "working" I mean they should have stories, have recruiters/trainers/shops in the game world, and have advancement bonuses.

Since the factions in GH2 seems to function on a much larger scale than in GH1, will the consequences for joining one of the bigger factions be on a larger scale too? Let's say that you side with the Rishiri (if possible). Would you then be attacked on sight by their enemies and hunted by the law on enemy worlds, given your character had a high enough reputation?

As for the Rishiri colonies, maybe have some frontier world with hostile but none too intelligent indigenous life on it? Either some primitive humanoid warrior culture or simple (but dangerous) predators. Also, since the Rishiri seems to want to avoid direct confrontation with the L5 Alliance, maybe some privateers funded by the Rishiri to secretely attack L5 shipping?

Anyway, sounds fab as usual, really looking forward to this.

What do garrisons do?

Is it worth noting that I can't telephone someone on patrol before I actually make contact with them (after which the patrol vanishes)?

I have an request about the new spinners, in that I would like to see some schools appear in which the player can train his or her skills a bit.  So far I couldn't find anyone who can train my non-combat skills, like Mecha Engineering and Mecha Repair, among others.

What do garrisons do?

Add soldiers, mecha pilots, and police to a scene. Right now each garrison block adds 1,2, or 3 NPCs. The result is that every government building is swarming with soldiers, and the Silver Tower is positively maggoty with them.

Most of the time, NPCs on patrol are of no interest to the PC whatsoever. If you were an enemy of the city you're in, though, you'd be attacked by the patrols. If the city is currently under attack, certain patrols may offer you jobs.

Good point. I'll add those.

Transforming mecha?

They are going to be added into the game along with a number of other Mecha based usable items.

Does this mean only the type of mecha changes or the overall shape changes?

How would altering these transformers work, how many and what forms can they be given, and what are the benefits and downsides?

We all do. When they come out the "Joke Mecha" thread will be flooded with transformers.

The transforming system will change your mecha's type from one value to another. Ideally it will also change the mecha's sprite. Certain limbs which have been marked as transforming limbs may also change from one type to another; for instance, arms could become wings and vice versa.

The tough thing will be getting the AI to use this feature intelligently. I really, really wish I had better NPC controls...

As a Bubblegum Crisis fan, I'd really like to see a Zoanoid <-> Battroid transformation. If I created one, would you consider it as an entry?

Sure. That one would be pretty useful for ground combat, I think- convert to Zoanoid for crossing distances fast and close combat fighting, convert back to battroid for missile combat and if hands are needed.
