GH Comic Art: Vikki (NT158) and Nai
« on: November 11, 2006, 07:23:35 PM »
Following the Typhon Incident in NT157, and her disapointing round at the Robot Warriors tournament, Vikki Shingo accepts a commision in the Federation Defense Force.

Here are some reference drawings of Vikki in the FDF uniform, her lancemate Nai Hansing, and a game portrait I made based on the first image. Okay, I hear what you're thinking, why are Vikki and Nai also drawn in their underwear? Mostly because I need figure drawing practice. My human beings are terrible. Also it's useful to know a character's exact body type when drawing them later.

\"Nai

\"Vikki

\"Game

I'm not sure about the inking style. I may go with color for the eventual GearHead comic, simply because I don't think these images look good enough in black and white. Unfortunately if you look at the game portrait you'll see that I'm crap at shading as well. I have a whole new respect for Ladi, Tung, and the other colorists who've worked on the GH portraits... that's a hard job.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

I'm still working on designs for the Puma and Chimentero mecha.

Oh. And here I thought you just liked Vikki in underwear.
Guess that's just me.

I haven't seen the BSG remake at all yet... they made Starbuck a woman!? Next thing you'll tell me that they don't use the same stock footage of the vipers launching every single episode...

Well, drawing people in underwear is usually fun. My wife says that Vikki looks too much like a boy, and that both characters suffer from "popeye legs". I told her that Vikki is supposed to have kind of a boyish figure, but she was definitely right about the calves being too thick.

I need to do something about the hair- right now, I'm pretty much just drawing the silhouette of the hair without any details, and that doesn't work. When I tried drawing details of the hair earlier that didn't look right either. I should probably do some hair practice with photographs and whatnot.

I am very happy with my Wacom tablet. I'm somewhat less happy with the amount of memory my laptop has... I haven't been able to use The Gimp as well as I want to, because it runs too slowly here when working with large images.

If it's any help, it's quite possible that her hair is extremely artificial; maybe not the roots, but basically the extent of styling. Perhaps her hair really shouldn't be that detailed. :)

Don't get me started; I won't be able to stop. :)

Some have proclaimed the currently-airing season 3 to be the best season of television ever. All I can say is that it will change you. If it doesn't, you can't be human.

Betcha Firefly would've gotten this good. I wonder if shows like this signal a course change in sci-fi fare.

I haven't seen Firefly either... I know, I'm a heathen. About the only good English television we get over here is House MD and Mythbusters.

I feel the pain. It's the same thing here in New Zealand.

Our free to air TV sucks.

In your defense, Firefly is a fluke. Which is probably why it was canceled. "Nothing gold can stay," after all.

Dude.

All you need is House. House and Special Victims Unit are about the only things on TV I can stand.

Stargate? Stargate's cool. And if you have cable, I understand that Battlestar Galactica really is christ risen.
