Not a total noob, just 95% noob....I have tons of questions!!!!

(1/1)

boxingbud:
I will try to keep them as simple and separate as I can! I really appreciate any advice that answers these questions as well as any other tips you will want to throw out there, I love gearhead 1 and 2 and I look forward to seeing what happens with 2! Ok on to the questions, and I do apologize if they seem off, I did search the forums alot but decided to just join and ask.

  1. What are these sewer runs I hear about? Are they in just part 1? 2? Both? And are they easy to get to?

  2. In arena mode, in part 2 anyway, I encountered flying mechs. What mech should I keep offhand to counter flying mechs? I simply couldn't attack them, even with other flying mechs. Is there a "attack with projectile" button? I just kept trying to click on the flying enemy.

  3. Performance may not be an important skill, but I have it as flavor on a character. That being said how does it work when I do use it to make money. What's the formulae? Also can I only perform in one spot, once, and never have it make money again? It's good if I want to get that nice meal and not have to dip too deep into coffers.

  4. Almost done!  What is the best build/mech to just plaid beat everything in personal/mech combat? If I wanted to just make a character that is just around to fight what would you reccomend for stats/skills? This would be a semi boring character but I could take this build and make a character that could still kick some butt and have more flavor.

 5. My last question! What is a good steady guide to just grinding my character if I want/need to? This relates to my first question I'm certain. I can do slow and steady grinding, or great exp grinding, whatever works.

Once again thank you everyone for reading this and even more so if you have any answers and feedback. I did find some good information already  (Like I didn't know that was my character's mood and that her armor had been damaged, I thought that was mech damage even though she was out of it LOL) but if I missed a good faq or beginner sticky topic let me know and I apologize for being annoying if I missed it.

1. Probably the references are to the "clean the monsters out of the sewers" jobs you can get from mayor types in GH1.  You have a better chance of getting one if the mayor likes you.

2. You've been trying to take down everything using Mecha Fighting?  :o  Oy vey.  Yes, there is a "fire projectile weapon" key.  Do the tutorial in Hogye in GH1, and check the menus and the help.

3. The last time I played a character with Performance was in a much earlier version of GH1.  But I'm pretty sure the games don't have the same limits on it at the moment—GH2 is once per game-day or once per day per spinner or something.

4. In GH1, the Argoseyer beats most other mechs hands down, especially with a bit of tweaking.  GH2 I'm not sure about, and it'll probably change with the next version anyway.

5. To be able to tackle tougher missions, your character needs strong mecha distance combat (Mecha Piloting, Mecha Weapons . . .) and personal combat (Dodge, Armed Combat . . .) skills.  Put your experience into the mecha skills at first, though, and let the personal ones take care of themselves for a while.  In GH2, the Conversation skill is also vital—without it, you won't be able to get missions.  GH1 offers some introductory missions and a first dungeon (Hogye Mines) to get you started.  GH2 offers you an initial mission too, but it isn't really balanced yet and you may find yourself getting creamed.  Also, cyberware is a good way of raising your stats in GH1 if you have the Extropian or Cyber-Psycho talents (in GH2 it's more of a crapshoot).

Do the GH1 tutorial in Hogye.  Read the Guides section of the wiki: http://gearheadrpg.com/wiki/index.php?title=Guides.  Above all, have fun!

Very excellent advice! I couldn't believe I didn't find the guides myself, I insist I was googling for it, but with the name Gearhead I ended up with a lot of automotive sites LOL

The mech guide is very good, it's the other aspect I was having trouble understanding. In game I don't have any personal character issues, I know what skills do, levels, personal fighting ect, but the mech abbreviations and commands were a constant problem in all but the most basic mech fights (walk up, beat up the other mech). Any other variable and I would be unable to shoot, hit a flying mech ect. This guide is crazy good and I'm bookmarking it.

One thing I notice is the game seems heavily graphically moddable, I do find the current graphics get the job done for both games but that being said are there any fan sites that have alternative graphics? I don't know if that's something I'm allowed to ask.

On a final note, I feel martial arts and close combat should have been separate abilities in gh2, though with knowledge governing skills two separate ones could wear a skill set thin.

PlaintextMan:
I'm a formerly heavy GH1 player, and now aspirant GHAR content creator/experimenter.

Yeah, I was also really daunted at all the details in mecha combat, but it's not really that complicated, and in fact way oversimplified, especially in GH1. So yeah, glad the wiki guides help you.

Yeah, it is. I'm a text-interface player, so I don't know much about how the graphics work, but AFAIK just look around on this forum under User Created Content and you'll find stuff like graphic sets and such.

Coming from GH1 I feel that this consolidation of the two skills is in fact much more good than bad. I used to get so peeved when my character could chop monsters with their bare hands, and then get absolutely no benefit from wielding a dagger or a staff (both martial-artsy weapons) and in fact per form like crap just because their not attacking bare-handed. If you want to model it all accurately, you could put skill webs and hierarchies and crosstraining into the game, but it would get too complex for a game such as gearhead.
