Question about kidnapping plot
« on: November 01, 2006, 07:36:06 PM »
I don't know if this is exactly the right subforum but if not feel to move the thread.

To my question: I'm not deep into GH so I don't know how to accurately name my problem, but I'll try to describe it.
I have the task to find someone's daughter or niece or whatever. For this I have to wander from town to town finding people telling me which town to visit next.
Now I'm at a hotel or something and saved my game there but now I can't do anything. Nobody will talk to me and there is a house I can't get into because the doors are locked and I have no code breaking skill.
So I thought I'd leave and come back when I have developed my code breaking but when I do so the person who brought me to the hotel doesn't give me the option to return there. Does this mean I will have no possibility of completing the quest since I saved when I was already at the hotel site?

I hope I could make my problem clear and it's not written too confusing. I would be very thankfull for help as I can't continue playing. I don't want to risk not being able to come back as long as I'm not sure I definetely can't find the woman at the moment.

My recommendation is to punch and kick the door until it comes down. Or, if you feel you have the technology for it, shoot the door with a gun. Note that kicking and punching the door won't give you the best possible results, unless of course you have the Kung Fu talent.

Problem is I have no guns, especially no big guns because I decided to use a melee weapon character. I hit the door quite often but it didn't help so I stopped. If you say there's a not-near-zero chance it could work before dying of hunger, I'll try it again.

Edit: I managed to bring the door's DP down to 7/45 in 6 GH hours when I eventually made a successful code breaking roll and unlocked the door ^^
But now I found a wounded victim inside which I guess needs to be treated with first aid. But because of a bug (posted already in the support forum as anonymous) I can't use the skill.
So my question if  I can somehow leave and return when I pushed my first aid skill remains.

I think you only have to use the victim, after the kidnapper is dead. No skill necessary.

Instead, if you use medical skills on the victim, you will certainly mess up and fail. Why? I think it's because it overwrites the use of STC VICTIM-1 but did not overwrite the clue.

When I fail, the mayor only says "All is lost". When I succeed, the mayor gives me the reward. Whatever the case, the quest is stuck in my memo.

I remember in earlier version of Gearhead, it is possible to be too late for the victim at the scene after you go thorugh all those tidious tracking. I guess the difficulty is tuned down a bit, but the quest becomes buggy.

The victim doesn't need first aid or medicine, just bump into them to activate the end of the plot. Using medicine on the victim will derail the plot; this was a bug, but it has been fixed for the next release. I'm surprised this bug hasn't been reported before, since it's existed since the beginning.

I'll try to replicate the bug with the memos sticking around, but I don't remember that the last time I tested this quest.

Edit- Actually, if you have a save file in which the memo hasn't disappeared, zip it and send it to me please.

Hm... then please help me some more. When I use the victim, I get the message "You tend to the victim's wounds and call for help" but nothing happens. Returning to the quest giver doesn't help (just tells me "all is lost") and as always I have no possibility to return to the hotel after leaving there.
I'm very sorry for bugging you but I'd really like to get this finished.

Sounds like you're not using the most recent release of the game, then. What version are you playing? You can see the version number at the start screen in ASCII mode, or in the history.txt file otherwise.

Yeah, that's another strange thing. I downloaded 1.010 but when I start the game (SDL version) there's a short message I 'd be using 1.002 before the title screen appears.
The history.txt says 1.010 though.

Edit: I assume downloading the game from the links provided on http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org/ is correct.

Joseph sometimes forget to update the version number on the title screen, but well, thats not particularly important...  I was going to comment about that before, but it wasn't really that important to me.

No more ideas, anyone? Guess I'll have to give up on this quest and hope it'll work with my second character I started today (without even coming close to finishing the first one ^^;; ).

I'll download that, and figure out the problem when I do have time. This weekend I seem to have a flu.
