Food and Mood?
« on: October 15, 2011, 11:32:33 PM »
Hello there.

Fairly new to the rogue-like genre, I just picked up GH1 and have been enjoying it (and dying) all afternoon, but there is one thing that is getting to me. Every few minutes I find my character's stats draining into oblivion. This guy is perpetually having a bad mood, no matter what I feed him. Even after woofing down a few steaks and a couple of rest sessions to restore his stats, that angry face appears again and everything is red.

As far as I can tell, he isn't injured. Is this normal? Is it commonplace to walk around with large stat penalties and to have to consume several food items literally less than every three minutes..?

Thanks for the help!

Hunger is bad, but many food items also reduce morale. Eating chocolate bars(+2 morale each), deluxe noodle cups(+1 morale each), and deluxe rations(+1 morale each) should help your character's mood. If he's in a really bad mood, you may need to eat a lot of chocolate bars. ;)

Morale and food are entirely separate things in GearHead.  Actual hunger is a separate status.

Eating in order to restore morale may backfire, as several of the food items reduce morale.

Bad:
Survival Sludge (-5)
Survival Bar (-3)
Adventuring Ration (-2)
Military Ration (-2)
Noodle Cup (-1)

Neutral:
Standard Ration
Standard Meal
Light Meal
Sub Sandwich

Good:
Deluxe Ration (+1)
Deluxe Noodle Cup (+1)
Chocolate Bar (+2)
Xozu (+3, but can inflict Stoned status)

At worst, morale can only drop each stat by one point.  If you are seeing further drops, something else is wrong.  Are you running out of stamina or mental-points?

Starvation can eventually reduce every stat to 1, but this can be instantly fixed by going to any restaurant in GH and will never directly kill your character.

Check you're not on autorun or something. If your character is on 0 stamina/mental and keeps doing tiring activities then his mood will drop like a rock, as well as kicking his stats to the curb.
