Sad GearHead Moments
« on: July 26, 2006, 04:44:46 AM »
Other games have Yet Another Stupid Death... since you don't actually seem to do a whole lot of dying in GearHead, I figure we could all share our particulary sad or embarassing moments.

I just had one in particular... I was doing the Robot Warrior arena fight, in the finals. I counted at least 7 mecha, including a Nova Storm (no biggie), Chimentero (eh), Ovaknight (oh dear), a Vadel (more eh), and then three mecha I added myself. I won't go into details, but let's just say they were all worth 4 million or so a piece and they HURT. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but the first shot fired managed to rock through my class 5 body armor and blow a nice, gaping hole in the gyroscope of my lightened, customized Chimentero.  Only took a few more rounds of fire to wreck it. Argh! Now I have to try to do a bunch of sewer-cleaning missions, try to get some funding for a mecha as good as - or better - than my old one. Rrr.

Share your stories and lament for your fellow posters.

I agree. The difficulty level is a tad bit low.

You know the "Kill your archnemesis" missions?

Well I was fighting him on a farm of somesort and would you believe a bunch of Vespas & Strongarms came around the corner and crippled the head of my Mecha.

Lo and behold the Archnemesis in an IceWind came around and finished me off within 3 turns.

Ouch.

Anticheese, that reminds me or a rather depressing story in which a Strongarm critical'd my Radcliffe, loaded with expensive salvaged gear, for 12,000 damage. I kid you not, 5-digit damage.

Needless to say I didn't get that mecha back.

The best ones are the plots involving a confrontation with your archnemesis. Take three steps in any direction and watch yourself get sniped for five digit damage.

Don't put too much value into your first mecha.

That was quite probably an ammo critical that caused another ammo critical... or several. That happens quit often to Radcliffs, but all the freaking time to Petrachs.

Yeah, I posted in the newsgroup about it. I've also seen it happen to Chimenteros (Chimenteri?), rocket-launcher Ultaris and once to... something. Can't remember.

An ammo critical, Means that the rockets explode inside your Mecha right?

How is damage for that kind of thing calculated? I think it should work based on the DC of each rocket. As in a little rapid fire rocket might not do much damage,  But a miniture nuke would be crippling.

Actually, That opens up another idea! Some ammunition is acidic, Some works with EMP - So if your ammunition blows up, Perhaps it would make sense to roll for damage against you with ARMORIGNORE?

Anticheese, have you ever had an ammo critical happen to you?

Trust me when I say you really don't want them to be any worse.

Somehow I think I just made a fool of myself by suggesting making a "Oh god no!" feature worse.

Fear not. It's a good idea, really, it's just the feature is already pretty good. Mecha/any fighting vehicle with a large ammunition pile arn't really designed to be attacked from the inside out, which is why amuunition cooking off is so disasterous.

Yeah, ammo explosions are so nasty that there's a comment in the code that says spare clips don't explode, or nobody would carry them.

I don't remember if ammo in spare weapons in your general inventory can explode or not.

BTW, Ovaknights are easy to kill if your pilot has the skills (or if the Ovaknight pilot has crappy piloting), since they have head cockpits.  I love doing called head shots with an HRP-6, or a phase cannon.  Of course, it would suck to get hit by that plasma core cannon, even once.
