Can't get Gearhead 1 to run
« on: July 19, 2011, 10:31:22 PM »
Hey there. New to the series. As said in the title, when I try to run Gearhead Arena, it doesn't run. Instead, I get the following prompt
'''An unhandled exception occurred at $10020D2A:
EAccessViolation: Access Violation
$10020D2A
$00468A5D
$00401038''
And then another similar one directly after, with more of the $_______. I am running it on Windows 7, so could that be the issue? If so, is there any way to fix this? Thank you for your time.

I'm running Ubuntu, but if I try to run the windows executable in Wine I get a similar error, so the problem may not be specific to Windows 7. If you're willing to give it a try, the wiki has some pretty straightforward instructions on how to compile GearHead that can be found here:

Thank you, though I'm unable to find the Gearhead Image archive, as both the source and the Image archive links give me the same thing, unless if it's only necessary to have this one file and the guide is a bit out of date or something. Also, when I type fpc arena -dSDLMODE,  I get the ''fpc is not a recognized internal or external command'' prompt. I apologize for my ineptitude.

The links both go to the GearHead files directory on Sourceforge. Click on the gearhead directory to open it, then the 1.100 directory, and it should show you all of the available files. The ones you want are called "gh-1100-src.zip" and "gh-1100-sdlimage.zip". Extract them both in the same place. If done correctly you should now have an "Image" directory in your GearHead directory.

Also, when I type fpc arena -dSDLMODE,  I get the ''fpc is not a recognized internal or external command'' prompt. I apologize for my ineptitude.

No problem. Have you installed the Free Pascal Compiler? I haven't ever compiled GearHead on Windows, so I'm not sure whether it can be done on the command-line or not. If the command-line instructions don't work, it should still be possible to compile GearHead in Windows using the Free Pascal IDE (instructions for this are in the last section of the Compiling GH wiki article).

Oh man. Simply slipping the images folder into the directory allows me to play me to play the game. Thank you for your help, however.

You're welcome.

Upon looking at the file, it appears that "gh-1100-sdlwin.zip" is indeed missing the Image folder. I don't know how this went unnoticed for three years (nobody plays GH1 on Windows?), but Joseph Hewitt should definitely look into fixing this.

This totally happened to me today.

I think the idea used to be that it saved space on the individual downloads (back when I started playing GH, I lived on a 56k), but I'm not sure why they're not bundled. Licensing?

And now the fun of attempting to find a character build that works.

Now that you mention it, the fact that the image folder is missing from GH1 does sound familiar. At the time, I think I just assumed this was intentional and I installed the graphics manually.

As for fixing GH1... Many, many moons ago Mr. H talked about updating GH1 (fixing a few minor issues, updating some portraits and adding some new portraits, etc.). However, such plans seem to have been forgotten about.  :-\
