Invasion continues. I'll try to clean it up later today, but I could use a little help here...

Oh god, I just checked all the recent changes on the wiki. That is ridiculous. It looks like there's mostly a lot of image uploads. I made an account, intending to help, but it looks like I need administrator rights for that. If you make some sort of cleaner/banhammer category, I'd certainly remove some of that junk from the wiki.

If comment is relevant and contribute to some extent to thread there is no reason to remove that comment.

A spammer posting in a spam invasion thread, claiming that there's no need to delete a post as long as it is 'relevant' and 'contributes' in some way? Wow, that's pretty brazen! ( Obviously, if a first post by a new member includes a signature linking to an outside website, then it is most likely spam. And if it advertises a commercial website, then it is, by definition, spam. )

This behavior seems to support my theory that not all spam is posted by 'bots' and that some of it is made by humans. I've read articles claiming that a lot of spam comes from 3rd world countries where people are paid a few cents an hour to do this stuff. This also makes it difficult or impossible to take direct action against the perpetrators.

Spambots are, afaik, about as dumb as dogs.
And use a rather simplistic reply algorith.
Almost never post more than once.
And always have at least one link to an external website.

If you qualify for at least two of the above, your post is likely to be deleted.
Speaking of which, sometimes I almost delete one of SharkD's posts, since he has a link in his signature.

Well, that'd explain the "dumb-as-dogs" thingy.

Oh well, time for a deleting-spree.
Wonder if I should keep the one above as an example...

In any case, if you see one, please remember to use the "Report to moderator" button near the bottom of a post.

If you do, make sure to defang the link in the signature.  These people aren't doing this to advertise to us, they are doing it to manipulate Google search.  So long as this website serves their hyperlink, they've got what they want.

If you can't force-edit the signature, then you just have to kill the post anyway.  Otherwise, the bank robber has been caught but hasn't returned the money.

Incidentally, one passive defense against this behavior is to have the forum software add a rel="nofollow" flag to user-provided links.  Then Google will ignore them, and the spammers lose no matter how lazy the moderation here.  This would work for the Wiki too.

Yeah... that's the problem.
I'm a super mod and I can't edit people's signatures. >_>

Also sad, I only just noticed this was about the wiki. >_>

Are you insinuating that I am lazy?

Would moving the wiki to Wikia be a better choice? They have dedicated staff which handle these issues.
