How do I stop crashing?

Every time I use the fly for a minute/jump option in combat I seem to end up crashing.  This is supposedly a piloting roll according to the wiki, but I've pushed my mecha piloting all the way up to 11 (with 18 reflex) and it still happens more often than not.  Is there some trick I'm missing, do I need something besides flight jets?

Daemonward:
If your mecha doesn't have enough thrust for sustained flight, then you need to switch your movement mode back to walk (or skim, roll, etc.) before your jump time runs out, or your mecha will automatically crash.
