As mentioned, I thought it would be fun to try and win without mecha gunnery or ranged combat. So here are my thoughts:
SF:2
It was surprisingly doable to win using melee weapons up until about 50 renown; extend weapons help a lot. The enemy movement took some getting used to, but they're only uncatchable in space after about renown 60. Also I picked up all the "optional" combat skills to make up for lack of long-range/explosive weapons. Towards the end the enemies got very tough, I lucked into two allies with savins, and named enemies dropped 2 steel halos in a very short period. By the final battle my allies were winning fights (or occasionally being killed) before I got to throwing range, but of the fights my allies couldn't win, I survived about 90%. The battleship fight itself was a nightmare. I had to leave the spinner and go do some training, then come back. Blast weapons are totally overpowered with so many enemies that are so hard to hit, so I armed my lance exclusively with them, and brought a volcano cannon myself (still unskilled remember). I set the battleship on fire with it, but I don't think it mattered since I killed it and its nearest mecha allies with a series of 1-shots to each square. I killed the battleship and nemesis on my third try, and luckily survived with massive damage to all parts.
Squadmates:
seriously unbalanced. They start useful when recruited (skills similar levels to mine?), but then quickly stagnate. The first two I recruited had +10. A while later, I recruited a third with +12s. The first two had enough experience to bring one of their skills to +11, but not two. If I had had allies from earlier they would surely have been useless at that point. Maybe allies should gain exp whenever the player does? As it is I'm leaning towards not getting any before the final battle if I play again.
SF:0
I went with Greatsword all the way. I won about half of the theles arena fights before they became completely unwinnable. I don't know how anyone beats these without savescumming or amazing luck or grinding forever to pay for dodge increases. There isn't really a winning strategy that I can see.
Savescumming: I treat this game (and most roguelikes) like snes adventure games. I'll reload to the last town if I've lost a mech in a battle, because grinding to get it back in an inferior mech would be no fun at all. However, I never saved or loaded during a battle.
Other thoughts: unique equipment is so cool, I'd really like if there were a reliable way to get it. Maybe after beating the arena in gaos, we could have winner-gets-salvage-rights random fights there, or unlock a "theme" store or something.
