So I'm making a server...
« on: October 29, 2006, 07:29:36 AM »
At the moment I'm thinking of exploiting my unlimited bandwith internet deal by using up the free connection on the router with a server.

What I would like to know is anything and everything that goes into making a well-made and secure server, This can be anything between recomendations on what flavour of linux makes for the best server to the voice of experience.

Thank's in advance.

Creating or becoming part of an IRC network.
Yep. That always happens. Better prepare for it. irc.gearhead.org!

It means that you have many computers constantly flooding your server with data requests.

I'm not really looking to make an IRC server, I was thinking more along the lines of website.

Damn DNS bastids. Make my life harder. Can't a flood kicker do something for that? What does Undernet use to make that stop?

A suggestion would possibly be to have the server as posssibly a mirror for gearhead or maybe a backup for any sources Joseph makes sahould something go wrong.  That is if Joseph would want to do either suggestions.  Otherwise, i guess a mirror for any place you frequent.

I'm quite happy to mirror GH, but what I'm really wanting to get out of this topic is suggestions on how to make a server insofar as what software, hardware and maintennance I will need.
