Mecha Sprites
« on: January 22, 2011, 05:16:24 AM »
Hi

I thought I should start putting these in the correct subforum, so without further ado, the mechs to date:

edit - obviously, feedback is highly appreciated, especially regarding their size as I'm really just guessing here

edit 2 - corrected sprite file name

This is great stuff Kete! :D

P.S. the Roc is a gerwalker (like the Neko) not a battroid, so the sprite file name should be: ger_roc.png

Could you upload the models to the GearHead Yahoo! Group? (Not sure if we can upload stuff to SVN.)

Really really good. My one suggestion would be to change the Ice Wind's pose a bit- standing perfectly straight like that looks unnatural, even for a robot. For the side poses it becomes hard to tell which direction the model is facing (I did the same thing with most of the 3D rendered character sprites, but that problem should be fixed soon) . If possible, could the feet be moved a little bit apart and the elbows bent?

The Roc is around 18m tall, the Ice Wind around 14m tall. For comparison the BuruBuru is 16m tall. Both sprites look pretty close to me, though I haven't lined them up. It's not important to get things exactly right so long as the impression of "bigger than the average mek" or "smaller than the average mek" is expressed.

Thanks for the feedback

Yeah, funnily enough I've spent some time since I made the Icewind trying to work out bones and posing (I'm just a novice!) So far not quite there yet, but I've managed it more or less with the Roc, which is a simpler model. Still not quite right, but getting there :)

A quick posing cludge, still havent got bones working the way I want, but thought I'd put a pose together in the meantime. This any better?

New sprite - War Cry. What do you think?

I think the posing is a big improvement. It looks less stiff and brittle and more like it's ready for a fight.

It looks pretty good, but I don't think the rear (butt) armor should protrude that much. In the item image, the armored half-skirt is smaller and clings more tightly to the contours of the mech.

Bit...small. I tried enlarging it, which normally brings those pictures up to observable size, but the gorilla pics are tiny.

I think the Gorilla could be embiggened a bit, and the War Cry shortened a bit. Here's a mecha size guide I put together for the artists working on Mischa's Story:

http://ataraxiatheatre.com/concept/Aileen%20and%20Mecha.html

The War Cry should be roughly the same height as the Buru-Buru, but skinnier. The Haiho model which currently exists should probably also be rerendered smaller.

Aha! very useful, I didnt realise the Gorilla was so big...
The problem I may have with the Gorilla is that, due to the posture, it has an enormous base, so to increase the height I may need to pose it a little more upright, which kinda ruins the look...

This is the latest on the model btw:

Anyway, I'll have a play, I need to update the previous sprites anyway.

Rowan - are you actually downloading the sprite, or just looking at the preview on the forum?

Just the previews, but all the other previews have been big enough that I don't have to download the sprites.

To reiterate, SVN would be a better place for these, but I don't know how it's set up currently.

Overall, I think everything in the Yahoo! Group should be moved to SVN.
