Stop the Bacon!
« on: December 16, 2010, 04:25:55 AM »
Well, it looks like our sweet little community has been found by all the bacon-bots.
So could someone please do something against it?
One or two posts of bacon might be funny, but this is simply getting irritating.

The forum appears to have no moderators; only the administrators Joseph and Kornel.  Kornel hasn't logged in in months.  Joseph was here two days ago -- and he apparently did delete a lot of spam posts then.  But the spammers just made more.

It is important that the posts be eliminated as soon as possible.  The spammers aren't trying to advertise to us, but to boost their search engine rank.  The longer their posts remain visible, the more likely they are to benefit.

If you look at the spam posts themselves, they contain links into other spamposts on other forums, presumably victims same as us.  This is probably part of the effort to fool Google into thinking the spamposts are "real" website content.

Yes, I know how bacon works.
So the explanation was a bit redundant.

It still stresses the need for frequent moderation though.
I've already been made moderator on another forum because of it, although the forum is rather moribund...

Anybody want to become a moderator? I've been trying to keep up on it, but am currently in the end of year crunch time at school.

Hm... so it appears that I've been snared for it.
Does give me a good reason to visit more often though. ^_^

Yes, I know how bacon works.

Oh, I thought you were playfully pretending that "spam" was a dirty word.  I suppose you mean "bacon" has been adopted as a codename for this kind of spam-for-Google's-eyes.  Wikipedia's "Bacon (disambiguation)" page says nothing of this.

Anyhow, things are looking much better, although the bots are still here -- I can see their names on the "Users Logged In Today" list.  Also, they are still spamming URLs via their personal details.

Spam, bacon, does it really matter what it's called?
Call a rose by any other name, and it will still have thorns.
That sort of stuff.

I'd like to thank the people who report the bacon on this site.
Sometimes I forget to check the forum for a while, so I really appreciate the reportings (e-mail notifications xD).

Keep up the good work.

Oh good. I wasn't sure if the almighty mods noticed.
I'm not actually a spammer. I promise.

Maybe we need to see about implementing a Captcha for posts that have links to external sites, like we did on the wiki?

I'm still on vacation; it's going to be a week or more before I'm back to noticing anything.

Thanks Onisuzume for keeping the ship afloat!
