Aegis Overlord: Aquilion, second look
« on: October 23, 2006, 02:44:34 AM »
Here's a look at my most recent version of the Aquilion mecha:

\"Aquilion

I inked this picture on the computer with my graphics tablet, so it's a little shaky. I still need more practice to really get the hang of it.

This mecha is being introduced by Aegis to counter enemy battroids like the Savin and Zerosaiko. It will enter production sometime between GH1 and GH2. Its weapons include heavy missiles, nuclear cannons, and probably some kind of emelee weapon.

Not really importnant, but if you are naming the mecha after the board member here, isn't it Aquillion?

On the topic of the melee weapon, what about a whip or beam lash?

It looks to be an heavy assault unit, but the cannons are so long that fighting in melee is impractical, except for possibly blocking melee attacks with the cannons themselves.  If they were detachable though, then the fists could be decent but not great weapons.  Alternatively, maybe the beam cannons themselves could be covered with an sheath-field of cutting nanites, which might be neater and more practical.

Actually, the melee-fighting mechanism I have in mind is for the cannons to detach from the arms (they're on mounting points) and get stowed flat against the inside of the shoulder pad "wings". This moves them away from the forearms (though the gun-tips are still poking out the bottom), at which point an energy weapon or two can be deployed.

I have to say that I like the way it looks, I'm sure it will make a great addition  to the Aegis fleet.

I think beam knives, knuckles, or claws would be the way to go on this one. That would look cool.

Electrical shot knuckles, just like SPT Layzner.

On the other hand, the idea of a beam bayonet has a certain retro charm.  ("Laser Bayonet" sounds better but wouldn't fit Gearhead's use of beam and laser.  Hmm, maybe a Shock Bayonet, a little nub on the tip of a gun that releases melee-range electric attacks when you stab with it?)  But perhaps that should wait for a mech with more retro-themed weapons overall...

Those guns don't look like they are designed to feel the ripping forces that bayonetting requires, I'm in favour of plasma claws - Something that will take a round or two to activate but will then become the active weapon (a good use for devices here)

Have you ever tried converting your line drawings into vector drawings using Inkscape? Or, maybe you could hook up your tablet to Inkscape...

Well, if you are going for long-distance assault, wouldn't you give it a melee weapon that would allow it to keeps a distance away from the enemy?

As a groundhugger pilot, I can tell ya that it's usually preferable to have a single weapon capable of both. So on that note, it occurs to me that it might be more appropriate to have a high-calibre secondary weapon with short range, relative.

This design intrigued me, so I decided to try my hand at it. Bear with me, I just got a new scanner so I'm still trying to figure out decent settings for it.

\"Aquilion\"

A couple things:

I envision this as a high speed, medium range space use mech, hence all the thrusters.

I tried adding missile racks to the shoulder boosters, but it just didn't look right so I left them off. They could always be optional.

I didn't know if Aegis Overlord had a decided-upon logo, so I just did that AEO logo on the side.

The guns just seemed like they would be a better fit as rapid-fire weapons, hence the ammo belts (plus I personally just prefer rapid fire guns).

As for melee, there's room in the forearms for some sort of deployable blades or maybe the hands could charge with energy or something along those lines.

I didn't know whether the cockpit was in the head or torso, but I was kind of thinking the pilot could climb in the back part of the head, sitting in that second part between the head and the main back booster.

It's a space mech, so it needed the fuel pods.

Anyway, let me know what you think.
