I was exploring Theles spinner, I opened a door, and go a laser blast to the face. Ouch. Okay, it's Theles, I knew what I was in for. I managed to kill the guy, and in his stuff I found a datachip listing the location of the S. S. Theles. Okay, sure, fine, now what? Well, I look in my memos and apparently I have a schedule for it. So I go out to see what it's all about, and it looks like a mission. I use "<" to go there, and I get a message saying "disable its engines and weapons to capture it" and it's surrounded by mecha trying to kill me. Well, okay, I'll shoot back. So I capture it, and "loot the cargo bay before the police arrive". Wait, what? When did I sign up for a pirate mission? I'm now a criminal? The L5 council doesn't seem to mind, but what if I had been L5Law? What faction was I fighting?
I think with some more dialog this could be fine. For example, a warning message ("This is the S.S. Tegoz, freighter for MUGL Enterprises. We do not tolerate piracy. Leave or be destroyed.") or a dialog option like when you meet up with a patrol ("I'll be about my business." "Surrender or be destroyed!", possibly with Intimidation allowing a clean capture as opposed to risking destruction of the cargo) or even just a challenge ("Die pirate scum!") to let me realize what was going on and bail out. Or some more subtle dialog - need not be very subtle - so that even though I don't realize ahead of time, afterwards I think "oh, I should have realized what I was getting into!" rather than "where's the rest of the plot?"
On the other hand, for law-abiding characters, which I used to be, finding the datachip could be the gateway to a plot about stopping the raid; or the user could choose which side to join (including the option "wait til they've shot each other up, shoot the victor in the back, and take everything"), or the user could find out which company owns the S.S. Tegoz and sell their stock short, or...
In short, it was a great hook for a plot, but I think it could use some fleshing out.
