Well, that didn't go well
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:38:14 AM »
Me and my lancemate, against a group of mecha. We're outgunned (badly), but not outclassed. My Savin has a few custom weapons, including a Zhuge Nu (basically a breaker cannon with 100 ammo), and an ink rifle which turns out to be very useful... before long, most of the enemy are blinded or overloaded or both.

And they take out my lancemate's Atgier. Now it's three against one, and they've been doing some bad damage to me; my Zhuge Nu isn't working, as are most other weapons; only my ink rifle and two combat lasers are left. Of the three remaining, there are: a blinded Vadel, a Harkney which I blind easily, and a Dao Deoji which I manage to overload but which seems unblindable.

In desperation, I use my repair skills mid-battle and manage to get my Zhuge Nu working again. One shot takes out the Harkney. Now it's a blinded and somewhat damaged Vadel, an overloaded but almost untouched Dao Deoji, and me in my heavily damaged Savin. They fire and take out my Zhuge Nu again.

Ink rifle and two combat lasers. The Dao Deoji's MV and TR are dropping continuously, he's into double digits on both. Unfortunately, he's also got ECM gear and obviously is very good at using it; almost anything I shoot at him gets disrupted. (That's why he's hardly damaged).

Plink at the blinded Vadel for a bit. Get close enough to talk, and manage to intimidate him into ejecting.

Right. Me against Dao Deoji. Mv MV, -4; my TR, -4. His MV and TR? -32. His shots are going so wild, that probably the safest place to be is right where he's aiming. If it wasn't for his ECM gear, the battle would be won easily.

More repairs. I end up using up all my duct tape, and exhausting myself, but I get the Zhuge Nu working again. (I'm still heavily damaged, though, and he's still hardly touched, aside from the overload).

His MV and TR continue to drop. Hitting him is like hitting the broad side of a barn, and there's probably no safer place in the galaxy than in his crosshairs. Combat laser. Disrupted. Zhuge Nu (over 90 ammo left, no problem, right?). Disrupted. That Dao Deoji's ECM gear is a pain.

Target analysis software says it's in the body. And his MV/TR are in the 50s. Surely I can take a called shot to the body? It's not like I don't have lots of tries, and at that MV, the ECM roll is the only one I can lose...

Disrupted.
Disrupted.
Disrupted.
Disrupted.
Hit for 0 damage.
Disrupted.
Disrupted.
Disrupted.
Disrupted.
Hit for 1 damage.
Disrupted.

...his MV/TR are in the -60s and I still can hardly hit him because of that ECM gear!

And my Zhuge Nu's ammunition is down into the 30s...

It's at this point that I make a really bad decision. After all, he can't dodge my if I charge at him, right?

...but I was the more heavily damaged one. I had no armour; and his mech ripped through mine like tissue paper, killing me and sending me back to the main menu.

I was killed, with an MV/TR of -4 each, by a mech with an MV/TR of -74 that I could hardly hit.

--------------

I think I'm going back to the autosave on this one. It's the best I've ever done. Incidentally, does anyone have any suggestions for hitting someone who has a very high ECM skill without being disrupted?

Blast weapons should work...

...If they don't, maybe edit off all ECM gear from the game cause it seems broken?

There really should be a point where a mecha gets so overloaded that it shuts down. At -74 MV/TR a mecha shouldn't even be able to move. :o

At the very least, you would think the ECM would go offline from sufficient OVERLOAD damage, simply due to the name.  After all, if a Mecha is overloaded, how exactly is the ECM still working?

I agree. The only problem with giving the OVERLOAD condition the ability to shutdown a mek, or even just some of its systems, is that you'd have to be careful not to overpower it.

Still, in this example the ECM seemed so overpowered it was kinda ridiculous. <.<

ALSO somewhat on topic, I feel your pain. I recall I saved up for AGES to get a mek once, a Trailblazer I think, (shush, I LIKE the Trailblazer and I was still starting out) and then lost it in the very first battle 'cuz I got charged by something I didn't even realize I was on a collision course with. Still, somehow that just made me even more hooked on the game. xD

You should download my Hauptmann!  He's so big, nobody is gonna beat you in a charge.  And it weights in at less than 300,000 PV!

(Good luck steering the thing though...)

Now why would I want to edit out ECM gear? That battle was the most fun one I've yet had in Gearhead. (It's also given me an idea...)

Blast weapons was the one weapon type I didn't have in that Savin. I should probably have gone rooting through the remains of all the downed mechs looking for blast weapons, though.

Anyhow. I went back to the autosave, and they blasted my Savin out from around me easily the next time; so I went back, bought myself a new Savin, and got myself a new lancemate. Everything continued to go well for a while; a previous nemesis decided to join up with me (at the same time, though, I got a _new_ nemesis), I got Savins for all my lancemates, in a variety of styles, and everything went well up until the final battle. I've lost a dozen mecha in that final battle already... my original, reformed nemesis and strongest lancemate died the first time through, and things took a very sharp dive from there; I'm down from 60+ renown to wangtta, purely from losing the final battle so often (but I have destroyed the battleship, at least).
