You knew it couldn't be long before I started making mecha, right?

Especially since there are so many great things not being used in GH2 yet.

Anyway at the end there will be a download link, but descriptions first:

Ones I'm happiest with: the JiguGeomi was well designed, imo.  The Shojo series is fun and I'm very happy with them.  The Buru Buru variants always amuse me.  The Shard and Gorilla variants are a neat concept, I think. Odinspear is pretty solid and a good addition. The Falcon is a reasonable design, proving more about the viability of missiles than anything else, I think. The Revenge is decently designed and a definite challenge for it's point value.  The Goyango is decent, although I like the idea better than the actual execution. Denkai, Marduk, Spider, and Raven are pretty reasonable as well.  The rest were mostly me playing around with concepts, some worked, some didn't.

The Spider is a class 2 Arachnoid originally created by the Red Mask Raiders for use in ambushing ships that pass too closely to asteroid fields or derelict ships.  The two main variants; the Jumping Spider (a melee assault mecha designed to launch itself onto passing ships then break it's way in) and the Trapdoor Spider (a medium range ambush mech) have found their way into use by both the Blades of Cihrna and some Privateers.  The Black Widow Spider, an attempt at turning the spider from disposable ambush predator into a formidable light interceptor is only in use by the Red Mask.

Since I saw someone mention it in a post  The Crihna Hyper Gorilla (also known as the Grond) is a variable fighter zoanoid.  It's believed the Crihna formed an alliance with a more technologically savvy group in order to facilitate it's construction.  With the addition of heavy actuators based on the Haiho design, and arcjets to increase closing speed the Hyper Gorilla is very nearly the equal of a Daum.

(BTW: Speaking of zoanoids, the Largo breaks the rule.  The cockpit isn't in the head.  Not a hard and fast rule, but still.)

The Raven is another ornithoid from the Bohemian Collective.  In keeping with their ideals of self-sufficiency it's solar sail wings, while delicate, allow great range (even though as of right now wings don't add to ornithoid space flight).  It is often used for secure transport.  The Night Raven variant is an assault mecha designed for minimal infrastructure damage.

The Goyango is a class 3 zoanoid from MUGL.  A new direction for MUGL, the 'chibi kitty' as it's known is their first pure zoanoid.  Unlike most zoanoids, it doesn't focus particularly on close range combat, a puzzling choice given MUGL's previous success with the melee heavy Haiho.

The Bandit Mebsy variant is another pirate kitbash.  Removing the left arm to lower weight it carries the unique Intimidator Pistol, a revolver-style rocket launcher as it's main armament.  Why it has a hat is unclear.

Similarly, the Marduk is a class 5 variable Battroid/Groundhugger built by Hoeller Industries for the Pro Duelist Association.  It's heavy armament makes it the equal of almost any mecha in it's class despite it's somewhat reduced maneuverability.

The Odinspear, a Space capable upgrade to the Thorshammer.

At one time state of the art, space superiority fighter Falcons were produced and launched in large numbers by Imperator Zeta pre-NOF as a stopgap measure to counter the other superpowers growing mecha superiority.  While small, at only class 2, and technologically outdated they can still be found in service by some poorer pilots due to good speed provided by their oversized engines and excellent short-burst firepower.  Unfortunately, the costs of missiles is likely to keep poor pilots poor for much longer than if they had gone with a more modern fighter.

Proving that no good idea goes unpunished, the SD-620d Heavy Shard variant is a variable Areofighter/Groundhugger for use in quick response defense.

Based on the successful technologies of the War Cry, the class 4 battroid Shojo series is a frankly crass attempt by Hoeller Industries to attract customers who have "outgrown" the asthetic of MUGL's design philosophy.  Compromised of several variants fufilling a variety of roles, the Shojo are decent mecha, hampered by an insistence on a focus-group derived committee built marketing scheme.  Each one is a Mechatan, supposedly representing some aspect of one of the habitats, factions, or popular culture. The variants in the Shojo line currently are:
Pretty Knight
Tohru Rose
Pirate Queen
Blazing Star
Lovely Officer
Wicked Princess
Elegant Duellist
Cooking Mecha
Golden Warrior
Gorgeous Punk
Beautiful Buru
Alluring Monk
Sentai Senshi
Rose Princess
Earth Love
Adorable Scientist
Charming Tank
Wolf Queen
Spider Queen
Missile Princess

Designed by an engineer fired from MUGL Enterprises, the Revenge is a 'light' artillery platform.  A class 3 Battroid, it uses a third leg to provide the neccesary stability to handle firing it's RG-16 main armament.  The name, and obvious similarity to the Haiho, lend credence to the rumors that the engineer in question was fired due to a difference of opinion on the best direction to take with the Haiho project.  Unlike the Haiho the Revenge has a small blister pod 'bubble head', nearly indistinquishable from the rounded torso, neccesary to move the cockpit far enough away to reduce the effects of recoil from the main gun.

The class 5 anti-air arachnoid JiguGeomi, produced almost 25 years ago by a small Earth based company, was not terribly popular on earth, it's role generally considered better suited to battroids or areofighters.  However, it has seen a ressurgence in popularity due to the sometimes difficult terrain of asteroids and spinner exteriors, and the very real need for solid anti-air defense against pirate fleets.  Though somewhat outdated, it  does possess some interesting innovations, such as the secondary turrets actually being able to move independently around the outside of the torso,

giving the Geomi it's nickname of 'Wandering Eye".

The Class 4 battroid, Denkai, is an attempt by Kettel Corp to increase market share in the spinners.  An effective beam weapon sniper, it's high cost and limited role capability has limited it's success.

Some Buru Buru variants:

The SAN-X4gs Ghost Soldier  was a Pre-Zero variant believed to have never entered into actual production.  In truth limited quantities were produced and launched as the first space combat mecha, but were lost for years after most of the pilots returned to earth on orders.  The experimental Ghost Driver unit in each one kept their presence on the asteroid armory where they were stored a secret till a young cavalier discovered them by accident.  Rumors of purchasers finding the skeletal remains of pilots inside, who died waiting for orders that never came after the Night of Fire, are purely urban spinner legends.  The original name for this variant is no longer known, Ghost Soldier having been bestowed upon it after it's rediscovery.

The Slugger Buru Buru is another pirate design, although also used by the Rocket Stars when captured.  Replacing the right arm with an arm salvaged from a Savin, and loading Heavy Actuators into the torso and arm, the Slugger wields a Reinforced Deutronium Bat (typically made from the abandoned engine shielding girders of scrapped battleships) with devastating effect.  The momentum of the incredibly dense metal is so much, in fact, that it takes several seconds for most pilots to recover full control after swinging, but if it connects, few things can withstand it.

Although still awaiting ratification by the Santiagoz Historical Society, The SAN-X14 Mainline is the current next iteration design as agreed upon by design consensus. Changes consisting mostly of slight improvements to the materials technologies, and slightly resloped armor for improved defense, it is believed that this may be the limit the design can be taken to without radical alteration.

the SAN-X13 Cursed was an earlier attempt at iterative design of the Buru Buru, attempting to marry more recent technologies into the line.  Unfortunately the selling points of the Buru Buru, it's stability and ease of use and maintenance suffered considerably.  Attempts to merge endoskeletal-muscular control with the Buru Buru's Linear Actuator technology, and extreme powerplant modification based on more modern designs resulted in heavy mechanical problems.  Attempting to add modern Assisted Balance control systems resulted in, rather than a gain in fine movement, a loss requiring an additional balance point be added.  Changes to materials technologies to reduce weight caused significant structural problems requiring even more design changes to overcome.  Movement system integration, which was hoped to increase efficiency clashed with the improved motor systems causing even more headaches, and eventually resulting in needing additional structural support for directional thrust.  Halfway through the design process the decision was made to upgrade the movement systems themselves, causing more delays and bugs.  In short, they made too many ill-advised changes resulting in a far less stable, and occasionally entirely unsafe mecha.  Much of the blame for this has been laid on the Project

Lead elected by the historical society, for not tempering the enthusiasm of the design groups. The various design models from universities and corporate and military research divisions were sold off when the X13 iteration was discontinued, finding their way from the general public eventually into the hands of privateers and duellists for whom the risks created by the extreme modifications were considered worth the gain.

The Panzer-Soldat Buru Buru has begun to appear recently taking part in small skirmishes, so far no pilots have survived to be questioned as to their origins.  While technologically equivilant to modern Buru Buru, they show marked differences in innovation, diverging at approximately the San-X4 era.  Disturbingly, extrapolation based on date/distance of known incursions puts their direction of origin somewhere towards Trans-Jovian space.  Some few of those recovered have made their way into the hands of privateers.

Similarly disturbing, the "Unicorn" Daum while approximately achieving technological parity with the known variants shows a radically different design path, and was clearly not developed by RegEx corporation.  They began to appear near Tohru asteroid space, shortly after the mysterious earthquake that rocked that sphere.

The leftovers:

The RIG-x1 Prime Savin is very recent, none having left the showroom yet and currently only available internally to Comet Metalworks.  A variable Battroid/Groundhugger no one is absolutely sure what prompted the design, although the Vice President who authorized it can regularly be seen sitting in the cockpit giggling to himself and saying, "Roll out!"

The Scorpion is a class 6 variable Battroid/Arachnoid from Aegis Overlord, designed as a dual-purpose Space/Ground heavy weapons platform.

The Sunrunner is a major variant of the Wraith produced by Comet Metalworks for near solarsphere activity. In 159 NT it set the record for furthest dive into the sun's photosphere to date.  Due to the dangerous environments it was designed to work in all explosive weapons have been removed.  Speed was also upgraded.

With the Majimak still awaiting active production, Hoeller Industries thought it would attempt to steal market share by luring back the fans of the 'pure' Buru Buru by producing a straight conversion of the Buru Buru using modern materials and technology.  the San-MD Most Dangerous Buru Buru was the result. (Went through design files and 'borrowed' the highest mass reduction, highest armor, most advanced version of same weapons, etc.  Did add external armor to all locations, and opted to 'combine' the various weapons from various versions of the Buru)

The Samurai is a class 4 Battroid from Hoeller Industries, for use by Rishi forces.  Little more than a mecha shaped delivery system for it's powerful Nova Katana, the external command armor and booster pack are designed to be jettisoned once it achieves melee range.  (Side note:  Being able to jettison armor/certain marked modules and recover them automatically post-battle would. be.  AWESOME.)

The Rocklord is a class 8 Battroid variable fighter that transforms into...an asteroid.  Built by the Red Mask Raiders for ambush attacks and defense of secret bases, nothing can really improve the fact that it transforms into an asteroid. (Eh, I did a Transformer, figured I owed it to my childhood to do a Gobot.)

The Gibraltar is a class 10 "hoverfighter" created by the Blades of Crihna by partially excavating an asteroid then installing reinforcements and mecha equipment.  No mounting points were used to avoid being spotted prematurely, but every inch of internal space is packed with weaponry.  Less a mecha and more a small mobile battle station, the Gibraltar contains enough firepower to decimate an entire fleet.

The Tyrant is a class 10 zoanoid from Biocorp.  It exists solely because I wanted to see how big a melee weapon I could make.  The answer is apparently DC 35 without getting even more excessively silly.

The Monarch is a class 7 Orinithoid built by the Bohemian Collective out of salvaged Gigas parts and their own technology.  Designed as a mobile weapons platform for use in geosynchronous defense over asteroids.  The two current variants are the original Monarch, a heavy missile platform, and the Armada Monarch, which invests much more heavily in defensive systems and avoids the missiles and aoe explosives of the regular Monarch in favor of space superiority fighter bays. (Drones)

The Folly is a class 1 variable Battroid/Areofighter.  Designed and originally built by a rich cavalier to showcase his technological innovations, making the scale model mockup bankrupted him, and eventually the original prototype was bought by Comet industries for pennies on the dollar.  While they built several additional copies, the technology involved was expensive enough that plans to do a full scale version never came to fruition.

While I love GH2, the variety of mechas bothered me.  While there are a lot of mecha total, at each "band" of PV the numbers seem limited.  Definitely going to download this and try them out!

It should be mentioned that the lack of variety in mecha is quite reasonable for two reasons:
1) Each "official" mecha is flawlessly designed for maximum balance.  This obviously takes much time for JH, and I think we would all generally want new versions instead of new mechas.
2) Compared with other features, new Mechas are quite easy for the fans like us to create.  With a base of standard designs, increased diversity in mechas really should come from the fans.

It seems one other problem is the general lack of variety in most mechas.  Only the Buru Buru and special mechas are a real surprise as to armament.  The rest only have the standard model.  Two ideas that immediately come to mind are a Haiho with extreme ranged weapon (like the Gause) and a Galah with decent weapon (just arming it with a Shaka Cannon would scare anyone not expecting it).

Oh, and I should probably recreate my mondo-cheap shuttle design.  It was about 20000.

Playing with these active, I'm noticing a few things.  First off, I should ditch the DRONES till further notice.  Also, the Shojo variants come up far too often.  Would lowering legality change how often they get picked? Or is it just a matter of them being in a price point with only so many other options for 'enemy' factions.  Also the Ghost Soldier Buru Buru shows up far too often, which might again be an issue of it's price point.

I haven't actually looked through the design files yet, so take the following for what it's worth...

The Shojo mecha show up so often because there's so many of them- if you've got a list of 25 possible choices and 12 of them are Shojo variants, that's gonna be a whole lot of schoolgirls. Setting their faction to a wide range or GENERAL will also make them show up more often. Legality doesn't affect mecha availability at all, so it's not that.

I was thinking about making the MUGL lineup alternating short, stocky mecha with big weapons (Haiho, Eggman, Tauner) with tall fast semi-feminine battroids (Pixie, May Queen). I was thinking about Josei as a name for a mid to high end general purpose model. Mind if I steal the Shojo name/concept for the low to mid GP?

I can't say about the Ghost Soldier; you're probably right that it's the price point. As with the Shojo you may want to restrict its factions. Notice that of the BuruBuru variants currently in the game, only a few are GENERAL types. At the moment there's no other way to make a mecha less common.

One thing that was suggested before, and I do want to play around with this eventually, was to assign certain roles to mecha and then use these roles when generating teams. For instance, a team might be composed mostly of the same kind of grunt mecha, with one or two support mecha, and maybe a single command mecha. Organized militaries (the Silver Knights, the Aegis Space Force, L5Law) would stick pretty closely to this kind of pattern. Irregulars, such as pirates and the Pro Duelist League, would be more irregular.

Well, I was never too fond of "kiddy-spiky-cool" machines . I guess as far as mechas in cRPGs are concerned, I prefer western way of looking at those things (which sometimes makes me exchange some of the default bots for my own) where usually all machines were serious pieces of battle vehicles made for practical use, not aesthetic value. "Let's just give this bigass, walking tank/building-tall infantry armor some paint-job" was typical approach usually good enough for me, staying at the right side of the suspension of disbelief (even if I should point out that there is quite some of anime, where mechas and battles they participate in look great - after all Japanese robots' mobility should be of some use).

Anyway, I've made this post - first after a tad too long absence - not to, as many probably will think, to share my opinion about mechas in general but to congratulate JohnnyDmonic for amount of work he had done. I probably will not try out most if not all of those machines but I really liked some ideas and descriptions. Some designs look very nice and even if Shojo model is a bit too much over-the-top to fit my taste, a couple of it's variant's names made me smile.

EDITs: So the post will look a lil bit better or to add some thought as long as it's the last post in the thread.

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/gearhead_dev/files/User-submitted%20mechas/

http://rapidshare.com/files/368390636/JDGH2Mecha1.rar

New batch, replaced the old file on the yahoo group and made a new rapidshare link.

Fixed a few errors in the old mecha, got rid of drones on most mecha that had them, and added a few more:

The Kyubi was designed to be L5Law's answer to the Corriach.  While not as fast or maneuverable, it has the ability to track down, and bring down, most areofighters.

The Medved is actually a series of two seperate variable mecha, a battroid/zoanoid and a zoanoid/groundhugger.  Designed and originally deployed in the cold northern climes of earth, they're surprisingly nimble for all their size and power.  (The zoanoid/groundhugger variant probably needs another shakedown for balancing, iirc it gets wierd stats in groundhugger mode)

The Silversword is a Silver Knight specific areofighter.  Resembling in many regards it's namesake, it is a very streamlined areofighter, similar in some respects to the SR-71 in visual style.  It's Vector Blade Pulse uses the entire outer edge, or 'blade' of the craft to generate an impressively powerful energy lance.

The Hunchback, named for it's odd posture and oversized back-mounted storage unit, is a class 2 battroid designed for rapid response spinner defense, specifically for indoor use.  It's two main armaments, a chain cannon and a linear accelerator cannon are integrated around each other, the spinning of the chain cannon providing the magnetic impulse for the linear accelerator.

The Mite is a small battroid designed for heavy warehouse use and high gravity planet construction.  Some few have been pressed into combat service for emergency defense.

The Ripper is a Class 2 battroid favored by pirates and privateers for rapid melee assault.

The Gorgon is a class 8 heavily armored Zoanoid used originally by the captain of the Blades of Crihna's elite Blockade Breaker Brigade.  Heavily armed and armored, it exists to punch a hole in the enemy line, whether the enemy is opposing mecha, or Solar Navy battleships.  While Captain Yuan-Ti of the Blades is the only known pilot of the unit, captured records show that at least 5 have been produced.

Lightly armed for it's high production cost, the Strike Breaker is a squat, yet powerful looking Class 4 battroid used exclusively by the Blades of Crihna's Blockade Breaker Brigade.  Relatively fast and maneuverable for it's weight, it loses out on speed to most other mecha in it's class, but was designed specifically for breaking into fortified defensive positions.  Boasting hardened armor superior to mecha much larger than itself, the Strike Breaker can take hits from almost any weapon system and keep going.  The company that designed the Strike Breaker had their entire production line, and company, 'bought out' in a VERY hostile takeover by the Blades.

An workers collective comprised of ex-Regex (say that three times fast) employees looking to strike out on their own started the mecha design firm AON.  Their first production design, the class 4 battroid AO-1 Beta is a showcase for their design philosphy of 'Simple, effective, modular'.  Billed as 'the Buru Buru of the Future', The blocky, modular design has yet to catch on, and AON will be in financial trouble if they don't land a large contract soon.  Currently 3 main variants of the Beta are being produced:
the AO-1A Trooper is a decent low-price combat mecha.
the AO-1B Sergeant is a heavy weapons modification of the Beta frame.
the AO-1C SpecOps is a sniper unit.

also from AON is the class 7 battroid Alpha, described as 'the poor man's Savin' by Cavalier Weekly.  Like the Beta it's rather blocky design has yet to prove popular with the majority of mecha pilots.  AON hopes later variants that showcase their modular technology better will prove it's worth.  While the core of the mecha is the equal of most modern mecha, the first generation of modular limbs and armor for the Alpha are lackluster at best, and it's mix of weaponry, while boasting some fine signature pieces, is considered underpowered for it's class.

Awesome, time to make some lances!

I also made a low-cost mecha, primarily for recovering the abandoned mecha from the abandoned ship/mine/whatever near the PC's home spinner.  It is so cheap and flimsy (read: No armor rating.  Size 1.  One hit and you're dead.) as to serve no better use.

The Cross is an ancient self-propelled space glider that was originally used for individual space travel when power was scarce and combat was rare.  The large, fixed wings were useful for catching solar winds and stray particles so as to minimize engine use.  It was also used for terran landings, gliding to the surface on its large wings, appearing as the Southern Cross.
Note: For anyone attempting to actually use this for combat, the mecha barely can fly.  If you put anything in one of the mounting points and expect to engage in ground combat, you'll need to either remove similarly-weighted gear or add flight jets.  I suggest adding flight jets.  I strongly suggest only using this mecha to get something, anything else.
Note2: The flare marker is pretty cool for its cost.  It does almost no damage, but lights enemy mecha on fire!  May be worth ripping off and giving to a lancemate.

Cute, I made something similar a while back, but it was just a torso with a jet basically. Heh.

New version of the pack:
Reduced mass mod on some that didn't need to be quite so spiffy, took away a few excessive status effects from mechs that didn't need them, changed the name of the Missile Princess Shojo to Missile Maiden, got around to changing the designation on the Goyango from the leftover Fenris desig, lowered the blast radius by 1 on the Beta Sergent's aux grenade launcher, lowered armor on the Samurai but made the head hardened, a few other tweaks.

New:
A new Beta variant, the Fire Support, which provides some big gun support in the middle weight class.

the Zorhai is a MUGL class 5 heavy weapons mech whose unfortunate round 'Ear' missile pods give it a slightly comical look.

The Tungbo Neoguli is a pudgy looking mecha used by Hwang-sa and some privateers, though not particularly excelling at anything it's considered a 'good luck' mech by some groups.

The War Whale is a class 10 hoverfighter used by the Bohemian Collective as a fire support flagship.  Often used to protect the transports.  The transports must get through.

The Chaiko, also called the 'Little Dancer' or 'Swan Knight', is an incredibly agile class 4 battroid, known for it's swirling energy Ribbon Shield.

The Redstar is the Rishi Dominion's security enforcement mech. It is also sold to L5Law under the name "Lockdown"

The Supreme Savin and Reaper Angel are highly optimized Savin modifications.  The Supreme is cobbled together by the Bohemian Collective from the remains of a Savin, a Gigas, an Ovaknight, a Pixie, and a Chimentero.  The prohibitive cost of repairs and ammo keeps it rarely seen except by their most exceptional defenders.  The Reaper Angel is a modification of the Gladius chassis and gaining popularity with both the Pro Duellists and Red Mask Raiders.

A series of Heavy Vadel variants was released, offering heavy firepower combined with high mobility for when you absolutely, positively, have to claim the high ground before your enemies.  Current loadouts include:
GR-24 shoulder mount and GR-12 Rifle
RG-16 shoulder and RG-8 rifle
PHS-25 Heavy Phase Shoulder Cannon and PHS-8 Rifle
Heavy Particle Cannon shoulder and Par-6 rifle
Grenade Bazooka shoulder and detonation cannon rifle

(really felt the need for some way to get decent heavy weapons into the mid-game)

3 new Savin variants
The Bruticus are actually retired Savin frames with armor and weapons stripped re-purposed for heavy construction.

The Flying Fortress is a close range heavy firepower variant popularized by Captain Leo 'Hard Charger' Yeager of L5Law.  Looking at it's formidable Rig Pistol You're almost certain it's just a railgun with the barrel cut down and a pistol grip added, but who would do that?

The Shining Knight Savin was commissioned by the Sliver Knights, though fairly powerful the units are currently being reserved mostly for public relations use.

Finding themselves repeatedly foiled by the colonies use of general purpose battroids, Aegis Overlord combined elements of their forces to produce the Xeophage.  Where the lighter elements of their forces, their Chameleon main units and Luna commandos often failed to hold back the heavier battroids of the spinners and their heavy siege units have proven not maneuverable enough to withstand concentrated assault, the Xeophage's battlefield role is specifically to seek and destroy other mecha.   Called the 'Savin Slayer' by the cocky young pilots chosen for the first production models, it has yet to truly be battle tested.  A fact which hasn't stopped the pilots from creating and sharing stencil outlines of various popular spinner mecha for applying kill decals later.  Representing both a design and strategic departure from the norm for Aegis Overlord, several careers ride on the success or failure of the Xeophage.  At rest, it's 'wing' thruster units fold down, forming an ominous looking cloak.

Never enough Savins, lol

but why no Zerosaiko variants? the basic variant still is heavily underarmed, and so high-end models should have some specialized units

also, maybe try making some Ganmen units from Gurren Lagann in GH2 mecha - I'm doing this for GH1 at the moment

we can trade ideas afterwards ;]
