GearHead 1 error from Vista

I'm trying to run GearHead 1 on Vista, but I get the following:

Then the program closed.

Due to this, I am unable to play GH1.

you can't run the program, or load the save? or the save crashes a while aftr loading?

I play GH1 on Vista without bigger problems, but sometimes similar error crashed the program everytime I loaded a save and performed similar actions - if it's the same problem, here's my solution:

Fixing it was quite easy: do something different after loading

A few things to check first:
- If playing the SDL version, make sure that you installed the image files as well. For GH1 they're in a separate archive.
- Make sure that the archives unzipped with their directory structure intact. There should be sub-folders named Design, doc, GameData, Image, and Series.

By the way, I was talking about the version found in this download link.  Also, I extracted the files as they were, directories and all.

Yes, that's the SDL version. Did you also download and install the image archive?

I don't know where that is.  Also, I wanted the text version, not the tiles version.

At SourceForge, click "View All Files". Download the one marked ASCII.

I've had the same problem as this fellow, but I WANT the SDL version.  I've downloaded SDL_Image.DLL, but don't know how to "install" it.
