0.620 robotics broken?
« on: February 02, 2010, 06:53:03 PM »
It is giving me self-aware robots 100% of the time, no matter what kind of components I use.

For that matter, does someone have an up-to-date guide on how robotics works currently?

It gave me the same message too but it has no effect. The one that counts is whether you can construct a sentient humanoid. You won't get that unless you fulfill all the stat and point requirements. I guess it's a bug due to some leftover codes from before?

You Science level need to at least as high as the highest stats. To build a sentient humanoid, your Science level need to be 3 higher than the minimum Charm. Since it's currently set to 10 for humanoid, you need Science 13 to build one. The valid components I found are computers, armors, power source (such as battery) and weapons. Computers give computer points and power points because of the batteries inside. Armors give body point and power sources, of course, give power. Most components give some build points. Computers and batteries give more than the armors. Somehow, unlike before, repairing fuels, e.g., Mecha Welding Kit, don't work any more - is it a bug?

The required points depend on the stats of the robots, which is specified in "series/ROBOTS_default.txt". Basically, for Body, you need armor points. For Perception, Knowledge, Craft and Charm, you need computer. For Reflex, Speed and Ego, you need power. Additional appropriate points will also give you better stats. I didn't experiment very thoroughly, for a sentient humanoid, you need about 840 build points and 15+ for all the other "special" points.

The best computers I found are the Data bracer or visor. The best armor is Large Shield and the best power source is the Industrial Power Source.

In my not so humble opinion :), I don't really think the updated Robotics worths it, neither for power and entertainment purpose. You need to spend one Talent slot and several millions to get to the require stats. Even for the sentient humanoids, you would usually only get the usual combat and mecha combat skills. Since you can't get the robots to learn new skills, other than their probably high stats, they can serve mostly as some boring combatant lancemates.

I'll see if I can fix this.

Ywl- agreed about Robotics being somewhat useless as of yet. The current version is something thrown together just to get it working as soon as possible. One idea for improvement is to add extra abilities to robots depending on the parts used/PC's skill roll. Last night I threw together a list of ideas:

Integrated Beam Weapons: A robot could get a randomly generated beam weapon built into its body. If I also change things so that beam weapons built into the body of a character spend no energy (something I've been considering so that monster attacks will work like in GH1), this would be a very useful (if somewhat boring) bonus.

Self-Healing: The robot can regenerate damage points by directly consuming repair fuel.

Integrated Systems: Once I get some of the other usable mecha systems working (hologram projector, force fields), these would make very nice robot extras.

Undying Spark: The robot is immortal. If killed, it will always be recovered from the battlefield.

In addition to all this, there should be a way for the PC to give a robot specific skills. I don't remember if adding tools does this already.

It'd be more interesting to be able to customize a robot like a SF0 mecha.

As the mechas, you can install guns, wheels and flight jet onto their bodies? Though to make this work, a whole bunch of SF0 parts need to be created and tested. You can also install an auxiliary computer so that the robot can store additional skills? That may make them a bit too powerful though. We also need to strike a balance between whether to treat robots as humanoid lancements or customizable tanks that have additional skills.

Sentient robots= human lancemates, the others= tanks with skills.
