Analysis:
I guess this is what you get if you don't grind.  Eventually a Haiho, or a Wraith, or a Heavy Buru Buru one-shots you.  And if you haven't been grinding, odds are you won't have many backup mecha.  I went into the battle with a piloting of 6 and a rep of about 5.

I'll try to get a piracy mission working today, if I have time in the afternoon. That will at least give you some character-appropriate grinding.

Grinding/missions needs some more balancing. Personally I think a certain amount of grinding is good- mecha combat is fun, parts scrounging is fun. Is it too much now, though? Also, some factions get way more missions than others. Advancement in the political factions is difficult because there aren't enough mission-givers. At the moment L5Law is probably the best faction to join, since they have tons of members in every city except Clund Rock. I think I should standardize the number of police/military/politicians/corporate execs per city to make things fair. Faction-aligned characters generated as building security should be given the NOPLOTS tag.

Missions also need to be more interesting- I've been adding some random events and special encounters, but the more the better. Allied and enemy NPCs could also use some character development components.

Quote
Also, no promise of anything from the mission giver.  This game was started under ~620 so I don't know if that had been fixed yet.

The episode got initialized before it got fixed, so no mention. Your next episode should get it, though.

Okay, quick turn around this time, off to find if there is a way to stop the raiders with nothing but a wraith.

Rishiri Spaceport
Rule one when the chips are down is to put your nose to the grindstone.  Well, word on the street is that Ajbmel was recently defeated by the raiders and that Esresygi has been recruiting some pilots for
Arxyso.  Two leads, well first, let's see who else these guys have beaten up. Ajbmel (24 year old female mercenary) got beat by them, but she is reluctant to help me get back at them.  Wimp, I challenged her to a duel, at least it will let me work out the kinks in this refurbed Wraith.  Hopefully they got all the bits of Arcah's skull out of the dash.

Chris almightly, is the Haiho the "in" mecha this season?  One shot, first attack hits and destroys my Wraith.  Friggin' hell.

Well, when in doubt, I guess my only hope is to hope is the Theles and its arena.

Theles Boom Club
I sign up for a match with Coyuci Sunsap.  He pits me against a pair of Street punks, I dispatch the easily and earn $35,000.  This might work after all.  In the club there is a merc looking for work, she charges $23,330.  What the heel, let's give it a shot, she might have a Mech I can "borrow".  Hmm, an Assualt Buru Buru.  Not horrible, not a mighty Haiho, but I could have gotten worst.  With a Mech in hand, I figure we can head to Cayley, they have a arena there and I hear they have a fungus problem.  I have experience with that.

Code: [Select]

Close Combat +5
Dodge +5
Mecha Fighting +6
Mecha Gunnery +5
Mecha Piloting +5
Ranged Combat +5
Toughness +5

This dude is all action all the time, I can use the muscle.

Cayley Rock
Killed some Fungus, bluw up some Ice Winds, made some money, did some training (Reflexes to 13 and M. Piloting to 7).  Maybe it is time for some payback.  I'll need to get Yglegely a Mecha though, maybe Clund will have them cheap?

Clund Rock
Not much luck here, just a tourist trap and a merc looking for work (Quokm 24 year old female mercenary), maybe later.  Back to Rishiri.

Rishiri Spaceport
Well, it looks like Esresygi (30 year old male mercenary) gave the last job with Arxyso to some hump named Fulci.  Well, I'm sure I can make him see reason.

Calling Fulci (22 year old female computer programmer).  Great a computer nerd, this shouldn't be hard.  And I can chat with him, but not threaten to tear his liver out... okay.  Maybe Esresygi again?  Ah, apparently I needed the bosses permission to challenge this joker to a duel.  So be it.

Random Asteroid.
Wonderful, I'm up against a burning opponent, probably a flaming Haiho with my luck, but still his chick is a computer nerd, how skilled can she be?  Ice Wind, ironic.  I was right, crap skills, though she lit me on fire.  Easy victory, and I pickup the chick Volcano Cannon and a mess of Swarm missiles.  My luck is looking up.

Yglegely tips me off about a hot mission Cubarm Imfe is offering.  I take it and easily defeat a Urban Buru Buru, capturing it in the process.  At least Yglegely has a Mecha now.

Reporting back to Esresygi, he gives me Arxyso's meeting point, time for a little payback, he'll be back to playing Hamlet at the community theater once I'm done with him!

Rishiri Interior
Hmm, Arxyso's a no show at his meeting point, but at least I'll be able to mess up some of his cronies.  Sweet victory, 2 HeavyFoot Buru Buru and a Wraith, easily dispatched, though I may have gone a little overboard with the Volcano rifle.  Well, let's hope those folks have insurance.

Arcadia Hospital
Reporting back to Ufkmi, we are rewarded with a Zeta Proof Ice Wind... well I'm sure it will come in real handy if we run into a Zeta anytime soon.  He also asks me what I want to do.  Well, I'd let you all choose, but one of the options is "I need to earn some more money." so, there you are.  However, I'm now at a crossroads, because I can 1. Continue with the plot, 2. Work to become the Arena champion, or 3. Use my new found wealth to go back and try that pirate mission.  Thoughts?

Also, can lancemates be programmed to pick up their own thrown items?

The Boom Club seemed too easy.

The Boom Club ramps up with your victories.
This is typical:
1st fight: A rat and a cleanbot
2nd fight: A cleanbot and a street thug
3rd fight: A workbot, a street thug, and a ravager (comes with shotgun)

I believe the Boom Club's difficulty is also based on your renown.  So the Boom Club will basically lule you into thinking it is easy, then be so hard that you die.  Like all the arenas in the game, but it seems to ramp up a bit quicker.

Are you using the latest SVN? This should be fixed; there's a default reward greeting that should load if no other persona fragment is found. There are instructions in the Support forum for recovering from a persona error.

That would be useful. I'll see what I can do.

Okay you bunch of humps, Ryoko, the almost infamous space pirate, is back to finish this adventure.  She was temporalily delayed when she got roped into playtesting my seven day roguelike, WWRL.  After that, she assisted me in participating in a panel of primadonnas expert panelists that reviewed the impressive list of 7DRLs completed this year.  Now, I was going to give her a little time off, but screw it, if she is relaxed and well rested her adventure isn't interesting, so on with the show.

Friggin' tech support, I get stuck on hold for two weeks when my phone starts whining about having "No persona fragment", giving me a Blue Screen and showing off a Red Ring.  Damn, don't they know how hard it is to get a job around here without a frickin' phone?!  I got stuck working for a bunch of basement dwellers who give up showering for a week to make games that are only mildly more functionally than my friggin' phone.  But, I crossed my fingers and entered the birthdate of the president of the Federated Commonwealth with my pinky toe like the tech support guy recommended.  It may sound stupid, but at least my phone boots now.

Now looking over our situation, it's time for a little reorganization.  First, Yglegely gets the Zeta Proof Ice Wind, but not before swapping out its Glass Cannon with my Repeater Cannon.  Burning + rust is a lethal combination I am not about to pass up.  Also, Yglegely get's trained in M. Piloting and I improve Dodge, Stealth and M. Gunnery.

Boneyard
First stop, Theles Boneyard.  One dog and one mining robot later, we're up $45k.  Easy money.

Yatate
Next stop, big money Yatate.  Or at least so Ufkmi claims.  We'll see.

Yatate - Spaceport
Looks like Ijtob has a civil defense mission, fun fun.

Yatate - Aurora Night
Word on the street is that Oxnzur is running a mecha arena out of here.  Well, why not, maybe this is the easy money they were talking about.  After being solicited, I beat up on a Wolfram and a Buru Buru for $9,582... Not the best money.  Heck, I get more for kicking dogs.  Well, maybe it is just the newbie rate, I'll have to see if the pay gets better later.

Yatate
As we leave, Yglegely informs me that he's heard about a hot tip he got that Mypetd Emmmun is offering double for a mission.  Maybe this is the big money?

Yatate - Spaceport
Mypetd Emmmun, the mechanic shopkeeper, wants us to beat up some mecha causing trouble in the spinner.  The pay is $13k, not quite dog kickingly good, but I'll take it.

Yatate
We head over to the troublemaker, a Wraith, and blast him out of the sky and take his ride.  Sweet, $13 and a mecha, good deal.  The Wraith nets us $58k as well, maybe this does pay better than kicking dogs.  While I have a chance, I improve Initiative and Ranged Combat.

With nothing better to do, I give Ijtob a call.  Or I visit her in person. Seems that Arxyso is in town and yet again, someone wants me to deal with him.  Sheesh, don't these spinners have defense forces or anything?  Much to my surprise, Itjob is willing to talk turkey about pay.  She opens up with $722500.  While collecting my jaw from the floor, she has taken my reaction for acceptance.  Damn right, for $722k, I'll take care of Arxyso and his whole family!  Wait, that didn't come out right.  Screw it, big money here I come.  She seems to think that he is hanging out in the Yatate Tower, so off we go.

Yatate - Yatate Tower
I hear that Lopkat Ihl is resting in the hospital after a nasty fight, hmm, last time I taunted a dude in a coma it bit me in the backside, maybe I should spare this one?  No, it wouldn't be right.

Calling Lopkat Ihl, it seems they bushwacked him and put him in the hospital.  Now that's hardly sporting.  He wants to get back at them but his doctor Ymcgaiml has his mecha locked up.  Maybe, I can convince the doctor to let him fly, nothing like a gimp to draw fire.  Hmm, the doctor isn't budging, oh well.

While checking out the rest of the tower, I bump into Vogtor (19 year old male mecha pilot) who seems lost.  Of course I can help you buddy, you can trust me, just look at this face.  Well, your mission is in the Station Exterior, I see.  Don't want to go if I'm going with you, interesting.  Wait, what was that?  He is sooo lucky that there is so much money on the line or I would wreck him for that.

Yatate Exterior
Patroling outside, we run into some Silver Knights guarding some Blades of Crihna escorting a ship.  This isn't something you see everyday.  Opih Yphes (28 year old male knight) tells me not to attack, was I planning to?  I was more confused than aggresive.  Seems that the ship is Bohemian, and the Blades are it's escorts and the Knights were responding to a distress call because the ship was attacked by the Rishiri.  Confused?  Well, so am I, but those pirates are worth a lot of money to me, so I kindly suggest that the Knights escort the ship and leave the pirates to me.  They agree, leaving the Gorilla, Ice Wind and Buru Buru to use.  With our new kit, the battle is all too easy.  Our battle plan consists of hitting them with the Glass cannon to rust them, and then destroying them with the Zeta Proof Ice Wind's Implosion bombs.

Yatate - Hoeller Mecha Works
I report the victory to Ijtob.  She equates the Blades escorting a crippled ship with a terrorist attack.  Man, this lady is cold.  But I am paid, so it's all good. She gives me a choice:
I'm going to see if anyone else needs my help.
I need some more action.
I need to get some better equipment.
L5Law must be told about this.

Hmm, this is a tough one.  With that cash, I almost have enough for a Savin, but not enough to retire.  Thoughts anyone?

Commentary tomorrow.

Action or loots mang, action or loots. I'd say loots, but I dunno if the 'new junk' choices have given me much that's decent yet. Still say go for the shinies.

Action would probably have more potential mecha to wreck and cart off, though. So it's loot either way, I guess. Go for the loot.

Why would you even have the choice of going to L5 with this stuff, anyway? Is Ryoko not criminal or somethin'?

Here are my observations, starting with the most serious first:

The fix for the CS_Greeting bug didn't work out of the box.  I managed to reroute the code around it, but it took more work than expected.  Fortunately, I believe Joe has stomped out that bug, so there shouldn't be too many folks with that problem.

The mission this time around didn't make much sense unless make the following assumptions: Hoellor convinced Rishiri to attack a civilian Bohemian ship in order to lure the Blades into a battle while distracting the Silver Knights with the damaged ship as part of a plot to paint said battle as a terrorist attack by the Blades.  Now if the plot generator could come up with an epic scheme like that, I am seriously impressed, but I'm guessing that it was just a quirky of the dialog. (of course, Ryoko on the other hand...)

Still no luck getting that pirate mission, maybe once I pick up a Savin or something.  Should I just suck it up and buy Awareness?

Glass Cannon + Implosion Bombs is an unbelievable combo, every enemy in that battle took over 1900 damage from the hit that destroyed them.  That is just scary.

In version 624, speaking to thieves grants pirate missions, and they are awesome!

The plot does seem a bit skeletal.  While this is useful as the player can imagine what is happening, it also tends to be confusing and keep the player from getting engrossed in the plot.

Only assuming that everyone- the person who gave you the mission, the knight, and the Bohemians- are telling the truth, or even know the truth. Rishiri might have hired you to attack the Bohemian vessel simply because it's Bohemian; of course they'd tell you that it was full of terrorists. Then again, maybe the Blades really did attack something in town, and the captain is trying to protect them. The Silver Knights may have their own reasons for being in the area- reconnaissance, for instance.

Here's a serious question: How should unreliable narration be handled in a game like this? As EuchreJack says, it can be confusing.

None of them really had a good reason to lie, it'd be easier to attack and kill me.  I suppose the Knights could have been lying in a ploy to cover up their cooperation with the Blades' and Bohemians' plan to sneak a Trojan horse into Rishiri space.  When I forced the issue, they sacrificed their Blades allies to keep the Trojan in play.  The real question is what roll does Hoeller play in all of this?  Are they acting as a proxy for the Rishiri?  Or maybe as agents of the Knights?  Hiring us to wipe out the Blades so that the Knights could quietly seize the distressed ship.  That suggests that the Hoeller convinced the Rishiri to attack the ship in the first place! Or that the Rishiri foresaw all of this and seeded the ship with false information to lay a trap for the Knights.

The player will fill in the gaps, but they need more meat to do it.  Try adding a bit more dialog in many cases, but leave it a little vague, let the player draw their own conclusions.  Those conclusions will drive their actions and you should be able to use their actions to grow the story.  Growing the story independent of the player is going to be very hard, your best bet is to let the player lead and try to keep up.

Obviously not, since you managed to defeat them.

I'll revise the dialogue, then. The point of this episode should be to make the PC choose what they perceive to be the biggest threat, either the Knights or the Blades. There should be two possibilities implied:

1) The Blades actually were a raiding party, and the Knights are defending them because either they don't know about the raids or are completely indifferent to damage inflicted upon Rishiri. It should not be implied that the Knights and the Blades are working together- is there anything in the dialogue which gave you that impression?

2) The Knights are using this Bohemian ship as a pretence to travel deep into enemy territory/snub their noses at Rishiri. The innocence (or lack therof) of the Blades doesn't enter into it. The mere fact that they were close enough to respond to a distress call should be evidence against them.

As for Hoeller hiring the PC to deal with raiders, that should (in theory) give more credence to scenario #1 in this case- the Blades did attack Hoeller, rendezvoused with the Bohemian vessel which then sent out a distress call due to  the heat the Blades brought down on them.

I beat up the wimpy pirates, but if Hoeller and the Knights are behind everything...

This didn't seem likely, actually, the dialog seemed suggest that the Knights were disappointed that they couldn't attack the pirates.

2) The Knights are using this Bohemian ship as a pretence to travel deep into enemy territory/snub their noses at Rishiri. The innocence (or lack therof) of the Blades doesn't enter into it. The mere fact that they were close enough to respond to a distress call should be evidence against them.

This is more the case, the Knights were "up to something" when the distress call came in and they responded out of honor.  Then they found the pirates escorting a wounded "civilian" ship.  Their honor prevented them from attacking and risking further damage to the ship, but when I arrived they didn't object to me dealing with the pirates if I didn't interfere with the ship.

As for Hoeller hiring the PC to deal with raiders, that should (in theory) give more credence to scenario #1 in this case- the Blades did attack Hoeller, rendezvoused with the Bohemian vessel which then sent out a distress call due to  the heat the Blades brought down on them.

That's the tricky part.  The best I can figure is that the Bohemians were somehow competing with Hoeller in the area so Hoeller convinced Rishiri to attack the ship (probably claimed it had contraband onboard or something) and then hired the player to take out the pirate escort to paint the whole episode as an attempted raid by the two parties.

Another option is that the sip had something valuable on it and the player was hired to remove the escorts so that Hoeller could claim the ship, but when the player mentions the Knights' presence, Hoelller lies and says it was all a terrorist attack.
