Hiya! Newbie has questions.
« on: September 19, 2009, 11:26:08 PM »
Hello!

I discovered GearHead at tvtropes.org (WARNING: The Surgeon General has determined that TV Tropes is more addictive than crack) through their article on Roguelikes. I'm new to Roguelikes and intimidated by them, but the customizable mecha element sold me.

So I'm having trouble because of logistics.

See, I want to buy a gun as an initial weapon, but for reasons unknown the shopkeeper (Quentin) rarely sells ammo for a gun he stocks, or sells guns that use the ammo he stocks.

At this point, unless anyone has advice, I'm tempted to say sod it and go melee all the way.

Any help would be appreciated!

~Charlatan

(EDIT: Oh yes, I'm playing Gear Head 1, by the way.)

All guns come with a fully loaded ammo clip. And, more importantly, any shopkeeper will reload any gun you bring him that's not fully loaded (for a price, of course, these guys are looking for profit). The only reason to buy seperate clips is if you want to reload in the field.

This extends to mecha guns as well, which means that every shopkeeper has nuclear weapons in the back room...

But take a melee weapon as well, in case you do run out of bullets before you run out of enemies. I recommend the monomolecular whip, if you can find and afford it.

Also, if you're looking for a particular item that the shopkeep does not currently have, you can try ending the conversation and then check his inventory again. Each time you say goodbye and click on him/her to check again, their inventory changes. Though, it can sometimes take a long time to find something in particular. And only certain shopkeeps will carry certain things. And, as I recall, the best (and priciest) stuff is only available later.

Addition to the "ending the conversation" bit: Use the "Exit Shop" command, and then tell Quentin that you haven't bought everything you wanted yet.  He'll get some more items, and you can take another look.  Note that this only works for the initial tutorial shopping trip.  After that, you'll have to wait for around 24 hours before shopkeepers restock.

Also note that BeamGuns don't run out of ammo; if you have a large amount of starting cash you might try buying a Laser Rifle, Plasma Rifle, or Dual Laser Rifle.

I can vouch for the accuracy of this statement.

Ahhh, okay.

I know the shopkeeps top off your weapon's ammo magazine, but I think there's way more critters than bullets in a pistol down in the mines in the starting town, even if I try to keep moving. I gotta get to the bottom! I want that mech down there!

Oh wait, shopkeeps change stock every 24 hours? Interesting...

Anyway, how 'bout this: What would you recommend as good starting weapons for the early game?

Huh?... [checks out saved games in v1.0 and v1.1...]

OK...
It seems that the "ending the conversation" trick works fine in the old v1.0. But in the most recent v1.1 it seems one does have to wait 24 hours for the stuff to restock.

I suppose this "cheat" was one of things "fixed" in the last version? :-( But it's rather tedious to wait 24 hours to find new stuff. [sigh]

Once I have a little extra money I sometimes buy an extra gun or 2 just to take the clips out - usually if it's a cheapish gun like the hunting rifle or cone rifle.   Cone Rifle is actually my usual choice as 1st gun - it uses Heavy Weapons skill and I can skip taking the regular guns skill at all, and then build up to the kickass Laser Cannons and such later in the game.  It is a bit heavy though...
Regular guns I usually start with Long Rifle/Hunting Rifle - cheap, light, long range and you can get AP ammo for the long rifle.  Then Laser Rifle - light and no ammo.
Red Dot sights early, then I change to Gas Vents to speed 'em up.

And yeah, melee weapons are really nice 'cause they don't run out of ammo - think about thrown weapons with RETURN like a couple of Boomerangs (nice and light, but low damage) or find a Magnet Token and make some really killer combos out of any thrown weapon, one of my favs is the Solar Spear.  And you can throw them from Inventory, you don't have to dedicate a hand.

EXTEND is great too (hit at 2 square range instead of just adjacent).  A good early combo I like is the Long Haft token in a Sickle - 1kg total, has Armorpiercing. You'll need something beefier fairly soon though.
Or  a Rapier mainly to parry.
Next step is Monosword/Chainsword/Gyro Mace, but then the Monoscythe/Night Scythe are great and well worth the weight esp after you build up your strength a bit.  Mono Whip is great after you build up Melee skill to overcome the minus to hit.

To carry all this I usually need the lightest good armor - Breastplate+plate sleeves/leggings early on, Ceramic Armor a bit later, Maximus at the end when I can afford the weight.  Plastic shields/small shields are nice and light to start.

Ahh so many cool weapons :D

Almost all of my characters are Small Arms users or are otherwise focused on only one type of weapon, so most of my advice will be geared towards that.

If you happen to start out with a lot of money (either from playing a young character or choosing a career like Banker), see if you can get a Plasma Rifle.  They have infinite ammo, and their BV: 4 and Scatter attribute makes them devastating against unarmored enemies (which will be most of the monsters in the mines).  If I remember correctly, they cost about $21,000.  If for some reason that's not an option, the Pin Rifle is a bit cheaper and is a viable alternative.  It's very heavy, but has 450 shots in its magazine.  Towards the end of the game I would buy a Heavy Rocket Rifle to go with the Plasma Rifle; kill the weenies with the Plasma Rifle and use the Rocket Rifle on anything with armor.

I usually buy dual Monoswords for my starting melee weapon characters, which seems to work all right.  I've also noticed that the Power Claw does some good damage.

The Dual Laser Rifle is expensive, but it also doesn't run out of ammo.

Generally for characters who use guns I'd be willing to use cheap armor like Knee Pads if it means that I have enough money for my big starting gun.

Incidentally, the Mines keep respawning enemies, so if you want to reach the bottom your best bet would be to keep moving and looking for the stairs.

New players might want to read my 2nd post in the GH1 Spontaneous Missions thread if they plan on reaching the bottom of Hogye mine before going to Snake Lake.

I posted there because of the spoiler potential. But, basically, if you decide to spend a lot of time in Hogye (particularly in Hogye Mine), then you will probably miss out on a neat quest as well as the opportunity to recruit one of two possible lancemates (allies that can fight and pilot a mech).

I was reading the old How the heck do i.... thread and I noticed this problem with finding ammo for guns has been brought up before:

Quoting: Question
"I find most guns suck because you cant get the ammo to show up in the shops. Sure i can buy a combat rifle, and it works, but if i cant find any rifle clips its not doing me a whole lot of good for dungeon work. I think it would work better if you could always buy ammo regardless of what is in the shop inventory.....i find relying on expensive laser weapons all the time very annoying."

Granted I don't always have a wide variety of clips, but... How's this. Some guns have multiple types of clips available. For instance, the Combat Rifle has AP rounds, Flechette rounds, Assassin clips, Indendiary clips, and ordinary clips, and a few other varieties. Once you've got three or four (and it helps to buy in bulk until you have a variety going!), just keep reloading the ones you have. I assume you know that last.

And, uh, was mostly fixed for GH2, at least for SF:0 weapons, what with the whole 'buy spare clip' thing. There's still some things I'd say could be improved with it, such as legality being applied to clips, other scales being included, and possibly the ability to buy clips that the individual shop doesn't have the weapon for (If they can reload, after all...), but compared to GH1 it's a bloody massive improvement.

GH1 though... yeah, it's a pain and beam weapons pretty much rule the game after a certain point. Maybe the GH2 code's portable?

*fiddles with code* Okay, I think this works.  Should I post the changes here or on another thread?
