Small idea for arena mode -- storage
« on: September 08, 2009, 04:10:29 AM »
The idea's fairly simple; allow the player to designate a mech as the 'storage' mecha. In doing this, it opens up two options when dealing with items: 'transfer to storage' and 'remove and transfer to storage', which are pretty much exactly what they say.

I'm not sure how many other folks do it, but I've currently got a 600 ton trailblazer filled with random, but potentially useful, junk. It'd save a lot of keypresses (as few as one, as many as four, I think, per item, which adds up) if there was a single option to do the moving for me.

While I'm suggesting this for the main game, is this, out of curiousity, possible to be modded in?

Why use a storage mecha in Arena mode when you could have multiple garages/warehouses instead?  Don't want the mecha you're currently using stuck in the same list as hundreds of spare parts?  Move 'em to hangar B.  It's a more elegant solution IMO, as you can't accidentally sell a second inventory list.  Having a "pawn all this junk" command that sells everything in that particular warehouse in one go might be nice, if unnecessary.

In RPG mode, I suspect spaceships will eventually fill that role.  As an interim solution, I like your idea:  Designated storage mecha with added "move to storage" command.  Easy inventory management is always a plus.

Yeah, the garage etc. would be the better idea, but I'm semi-sure it's been discussed before, if perhaps only in relation to a different discussion (Trading?). The reason I went with storage mecha is because, well, that wouldn't involve making some kind of non-unit inventory... thing. Just reducing the amount of effort it currently is to stuff junk in the mech. Figured it'd be less coding, heh.

Maybe designating a unit as storage would remove the option to sell the mech or its inventory; or better yet, both of those and allowing for individual item selling (which currently isn't allowed). Maybe full inventory reload (as RPG mode stores allow) too, to facilitate item stacking (it's bloody annoying, if trivial, to have to do the equip, reload, equip thing).
