GearHead2 v0.610
« on: August 12, 2009, 04:54:52 AM »
I just uploaded GH2v0.610 to SourceForge. I've also uploaded the Mischa's Story wallpaper that Ladi made, which can be downloaded from the GearHeadRPG site. This release hasn't been tested well and I didn't even get around to adding all the new portraits; this is an oversight, and should be corrected in time for the next version. RPG save file compatibility is mostly broken but CHA files should be just fine.

Here's an overview of the major changes:

New Shop System: There should be more of a difference between the high-end and low-end shops. High-end shops should be found more in wealthy areas, while low-end shops should be found more in poor areas. Shopkeepers will gain shopping ranks fairly quickly if you buy top-tier items from them.

New Content: The Dao Deoji is a high end mecha used by the Blades of Crihna. It's based on a heavy mining frame which has been rebuilt from the endoskeleton up with pilfered materials. Two new cities have been added: Wagner Spinner is home to the FCS supreme court and the L5Law academy, while Clund Rock is the dusty ring's premiere edutainment spot and the first Bohemian town to be added.

Experimental Graphics Modes: Added experimental paperdoll and mesh graphics modes. Uncomment one or the other in the config file to test them out; if both are uncommented, only the first one applies.

Stacking: Identical items will be combined in the backpack display.

Direct Phoning: You can telephone people directly from the memo display menu.

LoseRenown: Losing a fight gives you a proportional renown hit; the higher you are the farther you fall.

That's about it. Try it out and let me know what you think.

New stuff is epic. And it's a good batch.

The new shops do show some variety, though I haven't played enough to see a major difference.

The new content, I've so far only seen Wagner Spinner of, so I can't say too much on it, but Wagner Spinner is pretty good.

The paperdoll is exciting, though I haven't tried the mesh yet.

Stacking works well, and it's useful so I don't have to go past 20x Deluxe Noodle Cups to find that revolver cylinder.

Direct phoning is perfect.

The renown loss I haven't found out much about, partly because I don't build up any to lose by the time I get beaten senseless.

Cue angelic choir.

Also, amusing forum bug:  Highlight text in one post, then click 'Quote' in a different post.  The text works fine, but it uses the name of the guy you clicked 'Quote' for.

As far as graphics are concerned - it's kinda what we've seen in some recent threads already in image examples and my opinion stays the same:

Paperdolls only if someone will make lot of frames - one for every direction - for every sprite.

Mesh is a nice idea, especially for mechs. Of course, more detailed and scaled models would be needed as a test one looks like made of bricks. But for test - that's alright.

Maybe combination of those, like someone already suggested - detailed, nice paperdolls for people and.. well.. detailed and nice 3d mechas.

I still see some portraits that seem to not fit the canon much and do look completely unlike the others but generally I tend to find comparable, good looking portraits most often.

Also, some look great but kinda blurry - strange I didn't notice that before - like por_m_mechanic(-U-). Very good sprite but it and several others (presumably by the same artist) could use more sharp lines and shading.. although on the second though, maybe it should be left as it is as well, looks good enough.

Played for some time, no bugs found yet, no crashes as well. We'll see how it'll go in the future.

Found a big bug: If you start in Clund Rock, your core story will deadend after the first episode. This is because there aren't any allied cities, so no place to set the second episode. Don't start characters in Clund until the next version at least.

Found a smaller bug: Boxed lunches bought from dispenser don't stack.

Another one: Regen Boost pills lack description.

And yet another one: Dao Deoji's description too big to fit shop window whole.

Edits: Adding bug reports as they show up.

Not sure if this a bug or a feature, and I'm sure it's not new to .61, but when I attempted to fly backwards with '-' in a sheriff galah I instantly crashed. This was on an asteroid, so I wasn't jumping. Why would forward motion matter if the mecha has no wings?

[edit] adding on to the above, crates (SF0 cover) have directional markers under them.

bug: creating a character with '?' in the name causes GH to crash. Tested both with names consisting of "?" and containing '?'.

edit it just crashed after finishing a battle (the "duel a friend- no wait fight off the invading mecha instead!" mission)

unhandled exception
EAccessViolation : Access violation
With some snippets of hex that I assume are memory blocks and therefore not so helpful to you.

If you can replicate the crash, then the save file would be valuable. Zip it and send it to me.

Well, when trying to replicate my intended dueling partner was killed by enemy mecha and I was stripped of all of my limbs and weapons so had to flee the battle. My memo told me to meet said dueling partner in a plaza. Apparently she had been rescued, but had suffered head trauma because she was delirious and consoled me for losing a duel to her...

I'll see if I can replicate the crash, but if I can't, should I still send the save file?

No, it's only worthwhile if the crash can be repeated.

610 compiled on mac osx the same way I have always compiled it.

The camera no longer tracks the direction my PC is facing.  This may have been intentional, and actually I like the idea of being able to control the camera separately.

Unfortunately the camera controls don't work for me.  My macbook doesn't have an Ins key, and delete is really just backspace.

What is the trick to remapping these?
I'll post if I figure it out before Joseph or someone corrects me.

This is an awesome update Joseph.  Thanks for the fantastic work.

[EDIT]
Actually, whether the camera tracks my facing seems to be related to whether or not NOMOUSE is commented out.  Strange.

Oops, my mistake. It has been fixed.

The map scroll/zoom keys can't currently be remapped since I'm checking the keystate rather than reading the keypress. I'll see about fixing that.
