Wait, no mention? (Greatly belated SRW announcement)
« on: July 24, 2009, 04:53:26 AM »
Just remembered I never got around to mentioning it and a quick search through shows no one else gave folks here a heads up so...

Last year, around December, AGTP mostly-finished up their Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden translation! The mostly finished isn't anything to worry about; more occasional hiccups with some peoples machines or game copy than anything with the translation itself, and AGTP's forum goes have cleared up most of the problems anyway. It's complete, fully playable, and entirely delightful (Caveat: If you like the SRW games.).

It also marks the third SRW game AGTP's translated, with the SNES Super Robot Wars 3 and the original GB game preceeding it!

Does that sound like a bad commercial? Well, probably; I'll admit to being a bit of an AGTP fan, though their work largely speaks for itself. So far as the giant robot scene goes, beyond those SRW titles, they've also translated... well, a lot.

Just to list, their other completed mecha-related games include:
Accelebrid (A raceing type... thing. I've never gotten around to playing it, heh.)
Assault Suits Valken (A platformer/shooter released (and butchered) in the US as "Cybernator" which is pretty awesome.)
Cyber Knights 1
and 2 (JRPGs, mostly, but with some interesting twists -- including giant robots.)
Front Mission: Gun Hazard (Akin to ASV above... but better. An SNES platformer/shooter/RPG made largely from win and awesome.)
Future Soldier: Lios (Strategy game; sorta' kinda' like Fire Emblem or its kin, just without the RPG parts and mix and match customization of units.)
Gundam Wing Endless Duel (2d fighter. Notable as being the only one of these I've ever managed to play that involved giant robots and didn't largely suck eggs. It's pretty impressive, for its time.)
Jutei Senki (Strategy again. Bloody difficult the time or two I tried it, but fairly interesting none the less.)
Liberation Army (This hasn't been mentioned here before!? Top-down strategy/rpg/shooter/thing. It's freakishly awesome and totally worth a playthrough for anyone who's fond of giant robots and fairly massive (Often 2-3 hundred units on a single map) battles.)
Mobile Fighter: G Gundam (2d fighter. See the comment besides Endless Duel? This is one of the ones that suck eggs.)
and finally Mobile Suit Gundam: Cross Dimension 0079! (SRPG lite, mostly. Supposedly fairly close to the series's plot, it's pretty easy and seemingly rather short for an SRPG. Still, it's not too terribly horrible and, hey, giant robots.)

Whoo! With that, I do believe my <insert appropriate time period> giant robot gaming service announcement is finished, though hopefully y'all folks have ran across some of these before. In any case, enjoy!

<aside>
Though part of me does wonder if it's entirely appropos to post all these other games on GH's forums. On the other hand, giant robots! Any other awesome mecha gems out there?

Phantom Crash.
It's an original Xbox launch title. The gameplay consists almost entirely of running around an arena destroying other mechs. It's fun, but unfortunately feels unfinished. It would have been awesome on Xbox Live, but that was not to be.

Battletech: Crescent Hawk's Inception is rather old but worth playing.

It's completely appropriate. Someday I may even get the time to try some of these games.

I would especially recommend Liberation Army - great game, up to the point you reach 100% and find out there's nothing then. No outro, nothing, just mission going 'Time Attack' mode. And that some sub-system aren't implemented and probably will never be. But I guess it's not that big problem - I found only accelerator and automatic targeting really useful.

The Mech Assault series felt a lot like a nice anime-styled mech game. Unlike the Battletech series' focus, in my opinion.

P.S. MechWarrior video game series reboot! (I still call it MW:5).
P.P.S. MechWarrior 4 free!

Wait, MW4's out? I caught the announcement a few weeks ago, but hadn't actually noticed them putting the thing up yet. Their site gives me no clues other than a 'maybe soon' vibe. Argh.

My kingdom for a way to get MW2 to run on Vista, though. My own attempts have been thwarted at every rage-infused turn, despite numorous offerings to the search gods. Freaking Vista and its lack of support for older stuff.

Also, freak, METAL FATIGUE. I'll refrain to linking due to it technically being abandonware (read, not out of copyright.), but holy zounds! Basically, the only RTS involving giant robots (Well, besides Total Annihilation and its various mods (Excess!)) I've played in the last five or so years, and the most explicitly so of any I've played period -- and it's pretty bloody awesome to boot. Actually, here's one of the HotU clone links -- no download, so no ethical shinanigans. Is it not wonderful?

---

Also Linwarrior. Never played it, and probably won't (s'not really my cuppa'), but it's an apparently open source mech game along the lines of the mechwarrior series, in terms of gameplay. There's a bit more said on it in the Free gamer blog's latest post. RSS is a wonderful thing.

S.L.A.I. (Steel Lancer Arena International) is a pseudo-sequel to Phantom Crash that's on the PS2.  The game's frustrating as hell to start off in, mainly because NPCs from the game's highest ranks often show up in even the lowest-ranking battles, for the sole purpose of wrecking up-and-coming players.

How would you describe the games' gameplay? More like X-COM, or more like Front Mission?

I've considered getting it. I always preferred using short bursts of insta-recharge OC and a med-high speed SV, so the "Run away!" option is usually very viable ^^;;.

Mecha games are more fun when they're more realistic... I much preferred the older MechWarrior and Armored Core games.

Sounds like it could be coming out within a week or so.

Oh, yeah, Metal Fatigue! That game is awesome! I still have it around here somewhere. It's basically an RTS not too unlike Total Annihilation but on smaller, more customized scale.
